World War II
World War II Unit Overview:
Did the United States make appropriate decsions during World War II?
While the United States was struggling through the Great Depression, fascist dictators were coming to power all over the world. General Tojo controlled Japan; Benito Mussolini took over Italy and the infamous Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany.  Each of these dictators promised their people salvation from the depression but at what cost? Leaders in France and Britain had been calling for the United States to help stop Hitler and Mussolini in Europe, but isolationism remained popular until December 7, 1941, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The world would never be the same again. Think about the following questions. By the end of the unit you will know the answers to each one.
1. Why did the United States remain mostly isolationist until the bombing of Pearl Harbor? How did they help prior to the bombing?
2. What were the major battles of World War II and what was the Allies' strategy?
3. How was the atomic bomb created and how did they decide where to use it?
4. What was happening on the home front during the war?
5. What was the Holocaust? Who were the people and places involved?
6. Why were Japanese Americans interned during World War II?
7. What did the end of World War II mean to the United States and her allies?
