The Secret Annex
The diagram above shows a cutaway view of the house. The bottom left corner is the part of the house that people on the street could see. (Look at the blue arrow.) The entrance to the Secret Annex was behind a bookcase. (Look at the black zero.) The families lived on the two floors at the back. (Look at the two diamonds.)
Now our Secret Annex has truly become secret. Mr. Kugler thought it would be better to have a bookcase built in front of the entrance to our hiding place. Now whenever we want to go downstairs we have to duck and then jump. August 21, 1942.
The families passed the time pursuing hobbies, studying, reading, and charting the progess of the war. Anne liked to write in her diary. She also studied Latin and read classic novels with her father. The picture to the right shows the secret entrance to the annex.
Anne shared a room with Fritz Pfeffer, and they often argued over who got to use the small desk in the room. Anne wanted to write in her diary and study, and Fritz wanted to write letters to his wife and others. The picture to the left shows  Anne and Fritz's room recreated to show what it might have looked like while they were living there.
Our little room looked very bare at first with nothing on the walls; but thanks to Daddy who had brought my picture postcards and film-star collection on beforehand, and with the aid of pastepot and brush I have transformed the walls into one gigantic picture. This makes it look much more cheerful. July 11, 1942
