In the distance looms Snowy Mountain "The biggest mountain in the southern Adirondacks." When they qualify things that way, it makes it sound like they talking baseball statistics ("He's .333 when batting against left handed pitchers and two on with 1 strike"), but it really is a huge mountain, and a very steep climb. It's about a 6 hour hike to the top. I told priscilla that we were going to climb it this week, but she didn't believe me.
I flatly refused.
Norman's Cove That's where we started our hike, after rowing across the lake. The lake is about 2 miles wide at this point, and the trail up the mountain is only about a mile.
Okay, this time for real. Before leaving on friday, we climbed Baldy again and took more pictures with the correct camera settings. Actually, i think the real look is somewhere in between. These pictures may have too much yellow and not enough blue in them. It's hard to say. The first set has a nice medieval mystical feel. These pictures will never match actually seeing this stuff in person, in any event.
The drop Attempting to show how high up we were.
Indian River Hard to see in the haze, but you can make out where Indian Lake reaches the dam on the top left and starts winding through the trees as Indian River on its way to the Hudson. The wide part in the center of the picture is the beginning of the small Lake Abanakee. More before and after stuff with the camera settings.
On the way down. Actually, this is right at the end of the trail. You can see the lake beyond the trees.
Here's a picture of the mountain we'd just climbed, from the boat as we were leaving the cove. You can see that it was a windy day, because the water was even sort of wavy inside the cove, where it is usually perfectly still.
Not for the squeamish! Despite using a combination sunscreen/bug repellant, priscilla was assaulted by mosquitoes. We went to the Lake Store (a combination general store/tourist trap gift shop that you can access by boat (which wasn't necessary for us since it was right next to the property our cottage was on)) and priscilla bought something they had the nerve to call Fly Dope, which seemed to be a mixture of citronella and charcoal. The smell made me hungry for bar-B-Q. Anyway, for those interested in seeing some of priscilla's war wounds, you can click here and here. Those are just the two biggest ones. I actually got a total of 7 from this climb and 3 more on Snowy Mountain. I know you were all quite excited to get to see these pictures. I, personally, am nigh invulnerable to mosquitoes.
