People don't consider that it requires as much energy to slow a vehicle, as it does to bring it up to speed. (less rolling friction losses) thus if ALL US cars were equipped with a regenerative brake/accelerator rear wheel system, a significant portion of the energy used to slow the car, ( say 25%) could be captured and re-used for acceleration.

	The average us car has a 210 hp engine. at 746 watts per hp, this equates to 156 kilowatts. if each car is driven only one hour a day, on average... that is 156 kwh per vehicle. 156 times 231 million vehicles equals 36036 Gigawatt hours so... if cars were replaced with true horsepower equivalents, it would require 36 Terawatt hours PER DAY to charge them. Clearly... vehicles must be made more efficient. the average car requires only 20 hp to maintain highway speeds. if engines were this size, it would require 3.4 terawatt hours. or 3400 Gigawatt hours(PER DAY) this is achievable. it would however require 177 nuclear reactors of 19.2 GWH/DAY size, which is the current average size (at 80% on time) of a nuclear plant in the united states. We thus need both electrical generation, and fuel usage. the important point is to reduce the amount of fuel we use per vehicle. a loremo, at 157 mpg diesel, gets 5.7 times the mileage that our current vehicles achieve. this is like having 1/5th the vehicles running, or having 5 times the oil available. we need to be much more efficient. let's get to work!!!

Regarding the proposed Cafe standards for automotive emissions. 27.5 mpg now to 35 mpg in 2020... this is only a 2.03% change per annum in gas milage. What is there to complain about?????		156kwh * 365 = 56940 KWH per year per vehicle. in 2001 the average household consumed 10656 KWH if the vehicles were 18 hp equivalents, then vehicles would consume 4880 KWH per vehicle. thus with 2 vehicles per household, it would require us to roughly double our electrical generating capacity to either run totally plug-in cars, or to electrically separate hydrogen from water, and run hydrogen vehicles. (((IF and only if the average engine size is 18 hp.!)))
