Nazi Medical Experiments


RAVENSBRUCK

Dr. K.F. Gebhardt was the scientist in charge of the medical experiment project in Ravensbruck.

The motivation for the projects at Ravensbruck:
Medical military need
Stupidity
Nazi power politics
Sadism

Experiments in Ravensbruck fall into four categories:
1. Infectious Operations on Limbs
(Sulfanilamide Experiments)
2. Clean Operations with Regeneration
a)Bones: breaking, removal and grafting
b) Muscles: removal and grafting
c) Nerves
3. Amputation of Limbs
(Bone Transplants)
4. Sterilization
a) with Surgery
b) with X-rays
c) with Chemotherapy into the uterus
d) with Caladium Seguinum

*Categories 1, 2, and 3 were directly related to the German war effort.
*Category 4 tied into Nazi racial theories.


NEUENGAMME

Dr. Heissmeyer conducted tuberculosis experiments on twenty-five children, ages 6-12, who were brought in from Auschwitz.
All of the children were later killed.

Dr. Heissmeyer conducted tuberculosis experiments on twenty-five adult male prisoners.
All of the men were later killed.


NATZWEILER

Professor Hirt and Professor Bickenbach from the University of Strasbourg conducted experiments at the secret and urgent request for the benefit of the German Air Force.
Hirt and Bickenbach experimented to find the most effective treatment for wounds caused by mustard gas.
Hirt also conducted experiments for the armed forces on the causes of epidemic jaundice.

Typhus vaccines

Victims of the experiments:
At least 250 people who did NOT volunteer
