2004 DAY ONE
Day one was a long day. The trip started at 6am in London. We took the 401 East and drove through Toronto at about 8am. We hit Trenton about 11am and stopped for lunch and a tour of the Canadian Air Force base and Museum. We hit the road again with a full tank of gas and full stomachs. We headed for Belleville at our turn off North on Highway 37, which turns into Highway 7 East, towards the town of Kaladar. Turning North again we took Highway 41. Now keeping in mind that Highway 41 is such a beautiful drive with all the hills, rocks, pines trees, and clear lakes, we missed the left turnoff which was to continue us on Highway 41, towards Pembroke and eventually the eastern enterance to Algonquin and Achray Area, but instead we ended up at Highway 17. The simple solution was to turn left and simply follow Highway 17 towards Pembrooke. Upon arriving at Achray Area, at around 4pm, we loaded up the canoe, locked up the car and headed out on the lake in search of a campsite for the night. We picked a great site and set up camp. Dinner was cooked over the fire, (minus a lid for the pot, needed to boil water for the planned noodles) so we had fresh chicken with army rations. That night was the first of many great nights on the lake. Eventually we spotted the Northern Lights that had come out covering 80% of the sky around 11pm and lasted for well over 2 hours. I knew this was one night I would never forget.
