Crochet hook size I
Worsted weight yarn:
color A: 6 ozs. Contrasting color (Approx. � oz. Per panel)
color B: 13 ozs. White (Approx. 3/4 oz. Per panel)
Gauge: Rnd 1 complete: 1" wide across picot;
1 picot worked in pat = 1".

DIRECTIONS: (make 12)
With color A, loosely ch 118. (Add multiples of 4 chs to make afghan longer, or subtract multiples of 4 to make shorter. I advise you make a sample before you change the size!)
Rnd 1- (sc, ch 3, sc) in 2nd ch from hook, skip next ch, sc in next ch, skip next ch, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch, skip next ch, sc in next ch, skip next ch*, rep * to * across, (sc, ch 3, sc) two times more in last ch, (there will be 3 ch-3 groups in end); working across free loops of beg ch: skip next ch, sc in next ch, skip next ch, rep * to * across, (sc, ch 3, sc) once more in same sp as beg (sc, ch 3, sc), sl st to beg sc, finish off. (Mark right side and bottom edge.)

NOTE: (sc, ch 3, sc) groups should be in the same sp on both sides of the ch.
Rnd 2 - Join color B with sl st in beg ch-3 sp of Rnd 1, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, 3 dc in each ch-3 sp across and in 1st ch-3 of end, 9 tr in 2nd ch-3 sp of end, 3 dc in each ch-3 sp across and in 1st ch-3 sp of end, 9 tr in 2nd ch-3 sp of end, sl st to beg ch-3, finish off.

Assembly - With wrong sides and bottom edges tog, whip st panels tog using color B, weave in ends.

Border - Join color B with sl st in 2nd dc of any 3-dc group, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in same sp, skip 2 dc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next dc, skip next 2 dc*, rep across; to work ends: sc in 1st tr, [(sc, ch 3, sc) in next tr, sc in next tr], rep [ to ] across ends of panels; rep * to * across side of panel, rep [ to ] across ends, sl st to beg sc, finish off. Weave in ends.

Materials:
Small amounts of colors used in baby afghan, approx. 1/4 oz. Each color.
Size I crochet hook

Notes to Stitcher:
This hat is made from the bottom edge to the top of the hat.
Use baby sport yarn and a size F or G hook to make a smaller preemie size.

Special Stitches used:
Beginning double crochet cluster (beg dc cl) - Ch 2, (yo, draw up a loop, yo draw through 2 loops) in each of the next 2 dc, yo and draw through all loops on hook.
Double crochet cluster (dc cl) - (yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops) in each of the next 3 dc, yo and draw through all loops on hook.

DIRECTIONS:
With color A, ch 40. Sl st to beg ch to form a ring.
Row 1- (sc, ch 3, sc) in 2nd ch from hook, *skip next ch, sc in next ch, skip next ch, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch* rep * to * @, skip next ch, sc in next ch, skip next ch, sl st to beg sc. DO NOT finish off.
Row 2- Working in free loops of beg ch: sc in same sp as previous sc, skip next ch, rep * to * of row 1 @, skip last ch, sl st to beg sc, finish off. (10 ch-3 sps on each side of ch.)
Rnd 1- Join color B with sl st in and ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, 3 dc in each ch-3 sp @, sl st to beg ch-3.
Rnd 2- Work beg dc cl, ch 1, dc in 2nd dc of next 3-dc group, ch 1, *work dc cl in next 3-dc group, ch 1*, rep @, sls t to top of beg dc cl.
Rnd 3- Ch 3, dc in each dc and dc cl @, sl st to beg ch-3.
Rnd 4- Ch 2, skip next dc, *hdc in next dc, skip next dc*, rep * to * @, sl st to beg ch-2, finish off. Weave in ends.

To make the hat a little longer, work this pattern between Rnds 1 and 2:
Sl st in next dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, work 3 dc in the 2nd dc of each 3-dc group of Rnd 1, sl st to beg ch-3.
