The population of Salar nationality is about eighty-eight thousand persons, most of them live in Qinghai, Gansu and Xinjiang . They have their own language, and they use Han writing language.
Salar believe in Islam, their custom and lifestyle are similar to Hui nationality.
The regions which Salar are living are along the Huanghe River ,the weather is warm and with enough sunlight to grow many kind of crops, fruits and vegetable, most Salar are engaged in agriculture. Some of them are engaged in business, horticulture,cut and tan. The unique skill of Salar is driving raft in the swift rapids of Huanghe River.
The males of Salar always have moustache, they also like wearing caps in black or white. The females like wearing earrings and bracelets made of gold or silver.
There are many folk sports in Salar, the favorite one is kicking the shuttlecock. Most Salar are good at it , especially the young people , you may think they are dancing when you see their dexterous and graceful action.
Salar has its own folk song which is named "Salar song", it is well known among some of other nationality. Almost all Salar are good at singing. Salar also has its own folk musical instruments, almost all the females are good at playing some of their musical instruments.
