The population of Oraqen nationality is about seven thousand persons, most of them live in Nei Mongol and Heilongjiang province. They have their own language, at the same time , most of them know Han , Ewenki and Daur language , they use Han writing language.
Oraqen believe in Shamanism and worship nature and ancestor.
Oraqen's settlement is located in the DaXinganling (mountains ) and XiaoXinganling(mountains) , there are primeval forests around it, all kind of animals and plants provide Oraqen rich resource for living. All the Oraqen are engaged in hunting before 1950, now some of them are engaged in agriculture. On the other hand, all Oraqen are good at making handcraft, they make box, bucket, basket and boot by the bark of birch tree, and carve beautiful patterns on these products.
Oraqen's houses are made of wood and the bark of birch tree. They are very simple and easy to build and pull down, because Oraqen will move their house according to season to keep the house temperature and the hunting resource. Now most of Oraqen settle down and live in houses with modern construction. But they still live in their wood house while they go out to hunting in Autumn and Winter.
The regions Oraqen living in are always frozen over 6 months every year,
it is impossible to drive on the ice in this period, Oraqen get used to go out by
reindeer, horse, sled , ski and birch bark boat.
Oraqen get used to the lifestyle of " meat eating and skin dressing" .
Most of their clothes,cap and other products for every day life are made by skin of
roe deer which are cold-resistant , durable and wear-resistant.
