The population of Nu nationality is about twenty-seven thousand persons, most of them live in Yunnan and Tibet. They have their own language, at the same time , most of them can talk in Lisu language.
Nu used to believe in Primitive Religion which believe all the things on earth have
souls. Some of them believe in Lamaism , Christianity or Catholicism.
Nu are engaged in agriculture and hunting..
Nu are the ancient residents along the Nu River and Lancang River among the mountains, they used to travel over the river by cable, now there are a few bridges over the Nu River , but you still can find their traditional communications tool there.
Nu's house are made of wood and bamboo on the slope near the foot of mountain. There are many wood stakes to prop up the house on the slope , so their house are always called " House with thousand feet". Their houses are easy to build and pull down, it can be finished building in one day. That is because with the conditions of mountain area--- too much rain and fog, they have to move their house to safer places.
Nu like drinking and are good at drinking. They share " TongXin wine" (drinking with one heart) with their guests, similar to "the close faces drinking" of Lisu nationality ,when drinking, they would drink in the same bowl with their guest at the same time, pressing their faces close to the faces of their guests , no matter males or females.
On lunar March 15th., Nu celebrate their traditional festival--- flower festival (also called " fairy maiden festival"), Nu are dressed in their holiday best with a bunch of flower in hands to go to the cave she was killed to worship their fairy maiden whose name is "Arong" . There , Nu eat , drink, sing and dance . Arong is the heroine of Nu, she worked hard to bring water into the village.
