I'd bought a couple of white kids' umbrellas and traced rainbows,
clouds, suns and flowers on them with black permanent marker.
Next I had the kids fill the shapes in with paint.
We're gonna let it dry for 24-48 hours and then
they have their little umbrellas for the next rainy day!Idea from Marie :O)
~Rainy Day Play~
*Play in dishpans of water with cups, funnels, animals, & other containers.
*Paint with water on chalk boards or paper.
*Wash the windows.
*Go outside in bare feet on sidewalk and step in puddles.Materials Needed:
*Dishpans, cups, funnels, other containers.
*Paintbrushes, chalk boards, cups. *Window cleaner, paper towels.

~Rainy Day Video Activity~
*I pick three videos for children to vote on.
*Children vote by putting names on chart under their choices.
*As a group, we make popcorn and prepare drinks with tops on the cups. (Different snack for children under 3 years old.)
*I read one to three books related to the video chosen.
(If there is a choice, children who didn't pick video choose the books.)
*Watch video and eat popcorn.
*May want to reread the books or read other books.
*May decide to watch other videos later.Materials Needed:
*Videos.
*Books.
*Chart and construction paper squares for names.
*Popcorn, microwave bowl, small bowls,

Let's Make Believe "Storm"
*Make our own thunder noises--how can we do that?
*If power goes out, play with flashlights
--shadows, dark hallway, tag with flashlights.
*If power goes out, listen to radio and have picnic in

Scavenger Hunt
*Sing "A Hunting We Will Go"
and explain the scavenger hunt at circle time.
*Give each child a list and start the hunt.
*To adapt for younger children (under 3), just tell the child,
"Please, bring me a car..." (show pictures
if this is too hard and/or go with the child to get the item.)Materials Needed:

*Scavenger Hunt lists (one per child).

~Mudpie's~
*Collect old bowls, pots and pans,
and spoons and go outside in the rain.
*Make mudpies.
*Splash in puddles; find worms; & just play in the rain.Materials Needed:
*Pots, pans, spoons, bowls--preferably old.
*Boots for each child.
*Raincoats if we have them.

~Rain Sprinkle Painting~
Shake 2 or 3 colors of powdered tempra onto white construction paper.
Put the paper on a tray and set the tray outside in the rain.
When the paint is wet and the colors have mixed,
bring the paper inside to dry.Idea by Barbie (DCL) :O)
Hoola-Hoop Puddles
Use a hoola hoop(the puddle)and some bean bags.
Set up the hoola hoop on it's side or on the ground.
Have the children try to throw the bean bags into the puddle.Idea by Cheryl (PP)
~Jump in some Puddles~
Set a hoola hoop on the floor.
Play some music and have the children walk around the hula hoop.
When the music stops, have them jump into the hoop (the puddle).Idea by Cheryl (PP) :O)
