Under the Reading Comprehension Block on the report card, students are expected to receive at a least a level 3 in Decoding/ Word Recognition, Reading with Comprehension, and Retelling a Story in Own Words.

BOOK BUDDIES
Students will take home a book every night to increase their reading comprehension and retell skills. Please set aside a special time each night to listen to your child read and ask them questions about the story. Questions can range from the characters, story setting, plot, readers feelings, authors purpose, etc... The books are leveled to each child's ability and as a child masters each level, he or she will move to the next level.
ACCELERATED READER (AR)
Starting 2nd quarter, students will participate in the Accelerated Reader program, also called AR.  Each student will continue to bring home a book every night to read and discuss. The student may read the book as many nights as he or she would like until he or she feels comfortable with the story plot. When ready, the student will take a comprehension test over the story on the computer. Most tests are five questions but as the book increases in level, the tests contain ten questions. Points are awarded for each correct answer and recorded in each students AR Folder. At the end of each quarter, students are given prizes and AR bucks based on how many points were accumulated during the quarter. The prizes are predetermined by the school and the AR bucks given allow students to buy their own prizes in our class AR store. The preset goal for students to meet at the end of the year is 12 points. (That's 4 points a quarter.)
READING LEVELS
A reading level is different than the levels marked on the report card (Levels 1-4). Reading levels range from Levels 1-32. It's the book level your child is currently at. Below is where your child should be at the end of each quarter.

End of 1st quarter-   Level 4
End of 2nd quarter-  Level 8
End of 3rd quarter-   Level 12
End of 4th quarter-   Level 16

Each student should be at a Book Level 16 at the end of first grade. Book levels are marked on the quarterly report cards under the block titled 'Reading Level'.
