The Busload Adventure
April 2006
4/8/06 - 4/16/06   Rotavirus has struck the Busload!

It was Palm Sunday weekend and we headed up to Grandma D's and Grandpa John's house Friday night, April 7 so Matt and I could go out to eat our 6th Anniversary.

The next morning at 5am we woke up to what sounded like Aaron puking.  We both jumped out of bed to see what was going on and there was puke in his pack 'n play.  We got him out and held him for a while and he puked once more about 25 minutes later.  Then we brought him upstairs for some milk.  He ended up puking 3-4 more time especially a minute or two after he swallowed something.  He was doing good the rest of the morning but just not himself but at least he wasn't puking.  We watched Grandpa John and Matt cut down a tree in their front yard and Aaron was still doing ok.  We headed home to start getting ready for the Holmen's and Grandma Sandy and Grandpa Jer to come over for Palm Sunday dinner the next day.  Aaron did fine on the way home, sleeping most of the way.  He did get a fever and threw up a few more times over the next day or two.

Then, Tuesday morning at 2am we woke up to Jake puking.  We got him out of his bed and into ours and 25 minutes later he puked again....sound familiar?  He threw up quite a bit on Tuesday but didn't on Wednesday or Thursday.  Friday morning Matt called me at work and said Jake threw up at breakfast. He hadn't puked since Tuesday night so I was hoping that this latest was just a fluke.  When I got home from work that afternoon the boys were still taking their naps.  I got their snacks ready for when they woke up.  I got everyone up and put tem in their booster chairs.  Jake didn't wan tto eat or drink anything and didn't want to sit in his chair so I ended up holding him.  He dind't seem to feel warm so I didn't take his temp.  We all went outside after the snack and played a little.  jake seemed to want to play but it looked like he just didn't have the energy.  Anyway, Matt went to the hardware store around 4:30 to rent a power rake for the yard and then when he got done raking it he was going to go back over it with the mower and bag up all the junk the rake stirred up.  So when Matt started that whole process, the boys and I went back in the house to get supper ready.  Jake just laid around while I got supper ready.  So the four of us had supper, Jake tried to eat some bread but mainly just nibbled at it.  He did eat some finger jello as I was clearing the table after we were all done.  So after I got the kitchen somewhat cleaned up and played with the boys a little, I decided the boys should have a bath since they were outside for a while and got kind of dirty playing in the rocks.  So a little after 7 I got their bath ready and go tthem stripped down.  Aaron and Mitchell ran around as usual but Jake was still very lethargic.  So I bathed all three and got their diapers on.  I put Jake in his pjs first because he looked really tired so I wanted him to start drinking his milk right away before he passed out from exhaustion.  So after I got Jake in his pjs I went to pour milk.  While I was doing that I heard Jake whine a little and noticed he crawled up on the couch.  So after I got his milk poured I brought it over to him and picked him up and gave him his milk but he didn't want it.  A few seconds later he puked all over teh both of us.  Aaron and Mitchell just looked at us and didn't move.  I asked Mitchell to get the blue towel out of the chair that was next to the couch since I couldn't move without getting puke all over the couch and carpet.  he tried to figure out what I was talking about by grabbing a pillow, then the blanket but never figured it out so I just leaned over and grabbed the towel and figured I would clean up the puke on the couch and carpet later, I just needed to get Jake out of his pukey clothes (and me too) and get him in teh bathtub again.  So Jake and I waddled across teh living room to the bathroom dripping puke.  Aaron and Mitchell followed and closed teh bathroom door behind them once we were all in.  I stropped Jake and got him in the tub with water while Aaron and Mitchell sat quietly and patiently by the door, staying away from teh chaos.  I got a new diaper and pj shirt on Jake and put him back in his chair so I could get Mitchell and Aaron's milk poured so they could start watching their video.  Just as I got back to teh living room with their milk I heard Jake heave again, and again, and again, all while sitting in his rocker chair.  I ran over to him to help hold his head up so he wouldn't start gagging on his puke.  He never whined during this episode which kind of scared me.  He just opened his mouth and the puke flowed out.  I ran to get some towels to at least wipe his face off before we scooted to the bathroom again.  I pushed his chair into the bathroom, while it was dripping puke, and got Jake undressed again and into the tub.  Mitchell and Aaron were buckled in their rockers watching a video so I knew they would be ok.  After Jake's third bath I went outside, carrying Jake, and found Matt and said I think we should bring him in because it might be something more.  After Matt got inside I told him maybe he should try calling Marilou (the boy's nurse practitioner) to see if she thinks we should go in, since I tend to over estimate the seriousness of some situations, but after all jake had puked twice in 20 minutes and I dind't know if it was going to continue.  Matt got ahold of Marilou at home and she said it was either Rotavirus or Meningitis.  After Matt told her that Jake had been really clingy aand just lying around all day she asked if he was moaning at all.  Matt said not really.  She said signs of Meningitis are lying around moaning (for little kids) and maybe not wanting to be held.  Anyway, she said it really sounded like Rotavirus which is what I figured Aaron had but wasn't quite sure since he never got the diarrhea like most kids do.  So anyway, Matt said he would clean up the puke on the floor and the chair and Jake and I went in and laid in our bed hoping Jake could get some sleep.  I didn't want to put him in his crib because I was scarred he would puke while he was sleeping and not wake up from it.  Anyway, after Matt got some things cleaned up he went to drop off the grass clippings and would be back in about a half hour.  I figured Jake would be fine and he would hopefully fall asleep.  About 10 minutes after Matt left, Jake puked again, all over himself and the bed.  I carried him inot the bathroom and put him in the tub but then realized his diaper was completely full of puke so I took him back out and took his diaper off.  I asked him to stay there while I ran back into our room to pull the sheets off the bed so the puke wouldn't soak into the mattress.  Just before I got back to the bathroom, Jake started walking out crying and I looked in and he had peed all over the floor.  So I decided to just leave that until I got Jake cleaned up.  So after Jake was clean I stood up from kneeling by the tub to reach for a towel and stepped in the pee!  So I rinsed my foot off in the bathwater and both Jake and I got out and dried off.  I got Jake in a new diaper and clean pjs and cleand up the floor as quickly as I could and went back into the bedroom to call Matt to see where he was and if he was close to home yet.  He said he was about 5 minutes away.  So Jake and I just waited on the couch until he could get back home and start cleaning things up (again).  matt took the sheets off the bed and Jake's pukey clothes and rinsed them off and then put everything in the wash.  Matt then jumped in the shower and then came up to get Jake and bring him downstairs so we could sleep in the basement bedroom.  I stayed upstairs to clean the kitchen since it was still messy from supper so it would be ready for breakfast for Aaron and Mitchell the next morning.  There were also 3 baskets of clean laundry that needed to be put away that Matt didn't have time to during the day.  I finally got to bed around 1:30.  The next day Jake looked a little better but still didn't want to eat.  We decided to stay home instead of running errands on teh way over to my parents for the rest of the Easter weekend.  He is doing better now that it has been over a week after he started puking.  Aaron's episode only lasted 3-4 days and Mitchell never got sick!
