Deus Ex

Pic There are many different games, but they all have one thing in common. You play the role of someone, right? Whether you are playing Age of Empires and take the role of the king, or if you play Deus Ex and take the role of an agent, you always take a role in a game. Like all games, you take a role of someone in MDK2, unlike all other games, the major role you take is that of a janitor. Not only that but you also get to take the roles of a scientist who lost his head, and a 4 armed dog who has some rather unhealthy habits.

If you haven't figured out already, MDK2 is a very strange game. Not only is the game strange, but the name's strange, I mean who ever heard of something called, MDK2? Oh and by the way, no one has been able to figure out what MDK2 even means, if you have any suggestions please e-mail me since I have spent many sleepless nights trying to figure out what it means… well, that's another story. Oh well, back to the game. A game with such a strange name, and such a strange role to play has to have a very strange story to go along with it, which MDK2 does. MDK2 left off at the end of the first MDK, so I might as well tell you the story of KDK. You're a janitor named Kurt Hectic who works for a wacko scientist who calls himself Doctor Hawkins. Doctor Hawkins has invented a bunch of mistakes and such, but the greatest of them all is his mechanical dog. This dog, equipped with a fondness for firepower, and six legs of muscle and bronze, is one of the most dangerous watchdogs in the galaxy. Dr. Hawkins left earth and set up a lab somewhere in the galaxy so that he could get away from the people who thought that he was mad. Then one day, aliens from a far away planet attacked earth. Earth was hopeless, and was being ruined quickly. Dr. Hawkins had to act, he was, after all, the earth's last hope. So, he fitted Kurt his janitor out in a superhero suit that resembled the beak of a bird, and sent him and his robo-dog Max out to save the world from the alien race. Kurt and Max fought the alien valiantly until they came to the alien base, there they defeated the alien leader. With their leader vanquished, the aliens all retreated, and left earth alone. With the aliens gone, Dr. Hawkins, along with Kurt and Max, settled down for some peace and quiet and tried to relax at their galaxy home. They thought that life was back to normal, however that was not to be since the people at Shiny Entertainment needed money and realized that there was a market for a sequel to this game. Thus was born MDK2.

In MDK2, you take the roles of Kurt, Dr. Hawkins, or Max the dog. The atmosphere is truly a 3-D comic book as you go through the various alien bases, cleaning out the bad guys, and restoring peace to the earth once more. As I have gone through the game, I have found myself laughing at how comical most of the aliens truly are. Most of them are ugly, yet in a funny way. They are all big and goofy as they run about, suck lolly pops, or do any other alien thing. In MDK2 realism is out of reach, this is a comic book.

Pic The graphics in MDK2, aren't the best, but they bring out a 3-D comic book quite well. Many of the rooms are like disco rooms, so if you are interested in MDK2, don't look for realism. The sound is great, the music and sound effects work together to make MDK2 sound and feel fun. However, the enemies (aliens) are pretty much a bunch of walking zombies. There is no AI here, just a lot of point and shoot. But to have overly smart enemies would conflict with the atmosphere of the game, we're talking about a comic book here, not a life-or-death secret agent game. I personally don't think that there wasn't that much that was offensive to me in this game. However, there are a few things that I would like to let you know about. First of all, the game has a super-hero, comic book theme. You are a super-hero and it is a comic book that you are playing in. Secondly, Dr. Hawkins' dog, Max likes to smoke cigars and drink beer. It is all done in a comical manner, but still, laughing at a practice which oftentimes turns into a sinful habit could eventually lead us to thinking that smoking and drinking aren't that bad. I don't think that after playing MDK2 you would want to drink a six pack and order some cigars but, I just wanted to let you know that it is there. Thirdly, the blood is very minimal, yet like everything else in the game, it is comical. The only blood would have to be the alien blood which is green and looks anything but real.

Overall MKD2 is a good game if you want to take a break from the life or death thrillers that most of us like to play these days. It is a fun break, and a good laugh in the gaming industry. After all, to take a break is why we play games in the first place.
