I have a very special
Imaginary friend,
He’s very special indeed.
I see him sometimes,
When I’m all alone,
Or in passing glances
With strangers on the road
But you’ve told me
Time and again
He’s just my imaginary friend
So I smile and walk off
As he’s skipping along beside,
Both near and far.
I hear him sometimes,
He whispers to me as the
Autumn leaves fall
And my friend, he sings to me
When the ocean
Creeps up on the sand.
But you just smile and
Shake your head, saying
(Time and again)
He’s just my imaginary friend
So I smile and keep on dancing
To the song he’s singing
To my heart.
And sometimes I wonder
If he’s quite so imaginary
Because sometimes, I feel him.
In the tears that come
When I’m feeling lonely
I feel my friend, he’s
There, holding my hand.
Or in the laughter
That cannot sit still
I feel him there, too,
At my side
Sharing my smile.
And when, time and again
You tell me that
He’s just my imaginary friend
I just have to smile
As I feel him
Embracing my soul.
And as you’re standing,
And with a sigh, repeating
That he’s just my imaginary friend
I can see him sidle up
Beside you, and he’s patiently
Waiting for your glance.
And as you’re resting
On that park bench,
Tapping your foot with annoyance
I can hear his cries
In the passing children
Calling for you to come play.
And as you’re sitting, crying
Because nothing seems
Quite right anymore,
I know he is there
With his hand on your shoulder
Gently waiting
For your tears to dry.
He tells me sometimes
That he thinks you’re really special.
I smile in agreement
And we wait, he and I
Me and my imaginary friend
Who doesn’t seem to be
Quite so imaginary.
We wait together,
As we’re dancing
Among the clouds,
The heavens in our eyes.
