Content-control software is a term for software designed and optimized for controlling what content is permitted to a user, especially when it is used to restrict material over the Web. Content-control software determines what content will be available on a particular  network through the internet; the motive is often to prevent persons from viewing content which the computer's owner may consider objectionable. Common use cases of such software, include parents who wish to limit what sites their children may view from home computers, schools performing the same function with regard to computers found at school, and employers restricting what content may be viewed by employees while on the job.

Main Functions of the Internet Filter:

- Block Inappropiate material

- Filter offensive material based on Parental Prefenes

- Block malicous websites that pass out spyware and adware from their site.

- Block sites that use their own site to run internet traffic to stop bypassing the filter.

Advantages of Filters:

- Blocks material without individually blocking inappropiatte material.
- Updates allow new harmful websites to become blocked quickly.
- Enables administrators to monitor what is blocked  and keep the internet safe for young users.

Disadvantages of Filters:

- Appropiate sites might be blocked anyways.
- Filters can be avoided through proxies as well as a user moving to another house hold or area without computer filters.
- Filters only block bad websites  and tampering with websites that bypass the filter can render the filter useless.
