Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose a Landscape Architect?
New York State law defines Landscape Architectural practice as the planning and design of land for human use and enjoyment. We are licensed to create plans and overall project designs involving integrated land uses including residential design. In order to receive a license, a Landscape Architect must have a combination of Five years of school and apprentice for another two years. A Landscape Architect must also demonstrate competence on a four day written exam. Landscape Architecture is a profession which incorporates design and aesthetics, technical competence and construction knowledge. Through the preparation of plans and construction documents, clients can be assured they are getting creative and quality solutions and service.
Can you describe the design process you use to create a Landscape Plan?
Step one is to visit the site to analyze the existing site conditions including sun/shade angles, slope, soils, drainage and architectural style. The next phase is to measure the property and take photographs. After meeting with the client and understanding their needs, we prepare the preliminary design which is used as a planning tool before specific material callouts are made. The clients input is integrated into the design, which can now be looked at in more detail. Once the revised design is completed, the Landscape Architectural plan, construction details and specifications are prepared. This complete package is then passed on to landscape contractors for bidding purposes.
Do you install your designs?
We work with various landscape contractors who implement my designs. They act as general contractors on all the items in our designs, which include carpentry, planting, irrigation, drainage, lighting, masonry and patios. They are all companies which we have found to hold a high level of skill and close attention to detail.
How do you base your fees?
My fees depend on the complexity of the site and the clients requirements. If a client wants a simple planting plan which would not require city approval then my fees are towards the low end. If a client wants me to integrate various site elements including patios, pathways, wood arbors, swimming pools, I have to spend more time making sure all of the items work together cohesively.
