♥ The plague is carried by the bacterium Yersinia pestis.
♥ This bacteria thrives among in densely populated habitats of wild rodents.
♥ This area is called the "plague reservoir" or "plague focus."

♥ Black rats typically like to live near humans; hence humans become infected when these populations of rats become infected.
♥ It usually takes 10-14 days for the plague to kill off the majority of rats in a colony.
♥ Once most of the rats are dead, the fleas have to find another host body- this time, the human.

♥ When an infected flea bites a human, the virus drains to a lymph node, which becomes swollen into a boil.
