| Who Is This Man? by CBG | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Through many danger toils and snares Through hate and racism a path prepared Who would have guest God would grant such drive? To succeed and survive This child born dead yet today alive Why was this child permitted to live in a world full of poverty, racism, discrimination, and bigotry? These are the vary things he couldn't stand to see! So he "Fights Back" with pictures and words of poetry Like the last man taking his last stand! Or many hoped it would be So came his first indicting image "American Gothic" in Washinton DC This photo of Ella Watson a federal employee "Charwoman" she was called, cleaning person that is The tragedy had to be that she had been working there for 25ys Yet past up for promotion like the rest of her peers I'm sure a story like that brought this man to tears But who is this man? This man is you! staring back from a mirror of poverty & despair, of revolt & freedom Look at him and know that to destroy him is to destry yourself! Who is this man? A photographer, or a storyteller, a poet,or a composer He's all this and more But how could this man born in "Kansas Land" stand In the mist of confusion and contoversy Thay say a pictures worth a thousand words, His pictures worth ten-thousand! Forcing some to look at what they'd rather not see, & others a chance to see poverty's realty His poetry pants a picture itself which can not be disguised Thay take you past the lies to the lives. Pastthe unheard cries of the people despised To a world seen by though his eyes Can you feel what he has felt? Can you see what he has seen? I mean the truth that lies in the American Dream. I too am America. America is me. It gave me the only life I know--So I must share in its survival This man is Gordon Parks. Writer of Shaft, Photographer of both life & death And a prayer to the creator But the one thing that I remember most about this man is the piercing end to th the poem "Kansas Land" Imagen his feelings as he writes this by hand Yes, all this I would miss along with the fear, hatred, and violence we blacks had suffered upon this beatiful land. WHO WAS THIS MAN? |
