Restoring the River Bank
In recent years the river bank and the meadow near the bridge have become sadly neglected. Nettles have encroached on the picnic area, the bank has become eroded to a series of muddy bays, trees have fallen and scrub and bramble grown. The Countryside Management Service of Herts County Council, with help from the Partnership's volunteers have started to repair this damage. Three Rivers DC have included reghular cutting of the nettles into the management scheme, and already grass is starting to replace the discouraged nettles. Rolls of coir have been grafted into the bank, and a new pebbly beach formed, so that the stream again follows its previous course, the banks will be welcoming to the Water Vole, and the beach to paddling feet. Dead branches of willow have been removed, and the Working Party has planted fresh withies along the bank.

Autumn on the estate The sheep have been back with us this summer, and a few are still there in Dell Field They are a bit timid this year (last year, sadly, a dog got into the reserve and frightened them) and spend much of the time out of sight under the trees. However, if you go into the field they will let you look at them, but do keep dogs away, and if you are walking through the field where they are, please keep your dog on a lead. The field has a clear warning sign on each gate. The new Commmunity Woodland is thriving, and so is the undergrowth around the trees. During the summer, the volunteers cut paths through the wood, and will be tackling the clumps of bramble and elder during the autumn and winter. Why not come and join us for a good work-out in an outdoor gym? We meet alternate Tuesday mornings, details from Tim Venner phone 01923 284320, or e-mail [email protected] The pink and white summer house near the public tennis courts is available for hire to local individuals or groups. It has electricity, but at the moment no water supply. Details fromTim Venner. We were delighted to host the Hertfordshire artists again in September.
Community Orchard Maps from the 19th century show that there were a great many orchards around Chorleywood. With increased building, few now remain, but the Partnership is looking into the possibility of establishing a Community Orchard in the Estate grounds. This would be planted with apple, plum and cherry trees (and perhaps pears) for the benefit of everyone. As the orchard grows. local people would be able to visit and use it. In due course we hope to share the produce and have our very own Chorleywood Apple Day each October. The project was launched in October, when a packed meeting in Chorleywood Library heard about the Hertforshire Orchards Initiative. Three Rivers are happy for the proposed orchard to be sited in the field next to the cemetery, and an order has been placed for the first 25 trees, to be planted early next year. Some money is already available, but we are seeking sponsors for trees, at around 30. Do you have any established or old fruit trees in your garden? Do you know what variety they are? Is your garden on the site of an old orchard? If you dont have fruit trees yourself, do you know someone nearby who does? If the answer to any of these questions is Yes, or if you would like to hear more or sponsor a tree, please contact: Alison Rubens on 01923 282937 or e-mail: [email protected] or Ann Nelstrop on 01923 284813 or e-mail: [email protected]
