Conservation Program-
San Diego has a conservation program called the Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP). It address the multiple species habitat needs and the preservationof native vegetation communities for a 900-square mile planning area in southwest San Diego County. The MSCP is a subregion of the Natural Community Conservation Planning (NCCP) Program Coastal Sage Scrub Region. It is one of three subregional habitat conservation efforts in San Diego County, which contribute to preservation of regional biodiversity through coordination with other habitat conservation planning efforts throughout southern California.Completed in 1998, the MSCP Plan targets 171,917 acres of open space for conservation within the planning area, including over half of all remaining natural habitat areas (167,667 acres) and 4,250 acres of other open spaces (such as disturbed and agricultural lands) that contribute to conservation objectives.
The Zoo:
The San Diego Zoo is a great and wonderful place to visit animals and learn all about them. The animals there are in conservation programs and breeding programs to help the species rebuild to a healthy population. There you will find some endangered species; one example: the tiger. You are able to watch the animals closely and are given a background information on the animals. While you are at the zoo though, I suggest you talk to the keepers and ask them what the zoo or what they are doing to conserve this animal's habitat and ecosystem.
Take Note!
This page will soon contain a full list of endangered animals in the San Diego area.
