Chapter 1229
St. Charles, Missouri
This NARFE Legislative Update is taken from the NARFE Global Email Messaging System (GEMS)
On October 10, the House of Representatives debated and passed (232-173) legislation, H.R. 3056, to protect the privacy of federal income tax records by barring the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from using private debt collectors. NARFE had joined other federal employee and consumer groups in a joint letter of support to all members of the House earlier in the week. The bill now goes to the Senate. (For a tally of Roll Call Vote 960 use: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2007/roll960.xml) NARFE members who met with their respective Members of Congress or their staff as part of NARFE Lobby Month should report the results of their meetings to their Federation Presidents. Federation leaders should then report to their Regional Vice Presidents so that each may have a comprehensive report prior to the mid-November meeting of the National Executive Board. Our goal is to obtain a comprehensive listing of any and all Lobby Month meetings with Members of Congress or their staff. We already know that, among other things, Lobby Month contacts have boosted the number of cosponsors for NARFE priority legislation, Premium Conversion (S. 773 and H.R. 1110) and Repeal of the Social Security Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) (S. 206 and H.R. 82) Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), sponsor of Premium Conversion legislation, H.R. 1110, added three cosponsors recently. The total is now 272. However, 59 former cosponsors, still serving in Congress, are yet to be persuaded to cosponsor the current legislation. These lapsed cosponsors continue to need a message of thanks for their past support, along with a reminder to again join the majority of their colleagues in cosponsoring the current legislation. Use Octobers NARFE magazine (pages 20-23) to find these Representatives and then take ACTION. (The electronic path to finding this key information is to use the Legislative Action Center on the NARFE web site to find your delegation and their current status on NARFE priority legislation.
