St. Paddy's Day is over and Easter is only a week away! (Here comes Peter Cotton Tail)
The manic month of March has been busy! The big news so far this month is the collapse of Jetsgo. The Discount Airline went bankrupt last week, leaving thousands of travellers stranded. Thankfully that didn't include me, but it does have an impact on my plans... you see, I had booked my Tickets to Toronto for the Klaatu Kon 2005 on Jetsgo. As of now, the trip is on hold, while I try to straighten out the situation.
For those of you who didn't catch the announcement in last months update, Canadian Band Klaatu will be re-united for the first time in over 20 years at the convention to Launch their Boxed set "SUN SET". The event is being promoted by Fans First Inc. and will feature special guests, signings, parties and the first live performance by the group in 23 years! It's a royal bummer to have to miss this, but thanks to the situation, I may have to.
Andre Sauve, the Director of Communications and Media Relations at the Cisco Systems Ottawa Bluesfest e-mailed me about a great event being held in our nations Capital Capital in late April and early May. Alberta Scene is a showcase of the best artists from Alberta. The all star lineup includes Amos Garrett (the pride of Turner Valley), Gordie Johnson (former Big Sugar front man), Ellen McIlwaine, Tri-Continental (featuring Lester Quitzau, Bill Bourne & Madagascar Slim), and a whole lot more!
For more information, visit their website at www.albertascene.ca!
There's a great classic Rock-n-Roll showcase coming to the Rock. "Great Balls of Fire", the Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison Tribute, will be touring Newfoundland in April. Starring Bill Diel (as Jerry Lee Lewis) and Bernie Jessome (as Roy Orbison), the show will be backed by St. John's band Ironworks. The tour will visit;
Club One, St. Johns: Sun. Apr. 3, 7:30 pm
Middle School Sports Complex, Clarenville: Mon. Apr. 4, 7:30 pm
The Lions Club, Bay Roberts: Tues. Apr. 5, 7:30 pm
Arts & Culture Centre, Gander: Thurs., Apr. 7, 8:00 pm
Arts & Culture Centre, Grand Falls: Fri. Apr. 8, 8:00 pm
Arts & Culture Centre, Corner Brook: Sat. Apr. 9, 8:00
There may be a show added for Grand Bank, but that has yet to announced. For more information, you can visit their websites, berniejessomentertainment.com or Click Here for Bill Deils Website.
Due to technical difficulties, the first episode of the Songwriters for March, featuring Reverend Billy Wirtz, had to be postponed. It is now scheduled to be broadcast early in April. See the list below.
The Hot Tin Roof episode went in the record books as the Shortest Songwriters ever, weighing in at only 37 minutes. Featuring an interview with Jacke Windahl, and featuring music from their self titled EP, what the show lacked in time, it certainly made up for in entertainment. These guy's (and girl) are quickly building a large following overseas!
Jeff Greene was my guest on today's show, and he also recently appeared at a benefit concert at the S.S. MEIGLE Lounge in Seal Cove, at which yours truely was the emcee. Jeff was telling me that "Work on my new album is progressing nicely. We're aiming for a Summer Release" His first album "Time to Heal" is still available, plus there's a new song available for download on his website, www.jeffgreene.ca.
Sandy Morris' new album, "Music from Land & Sea", is now available. I will say no more than to tune in to the Songwriters on Sunday, April 3rd., for all the scoop on this great new Newfoundland CD.
Short and Sweet have boosted their numbers. The folk due consisting of Leona Mercer and Tammy were joined on stage by Mike Fisher and Jeff White of Hammingwell at a Benefit Concert in Seal Cove, last week. Could this mean that Short & Sweet are working on a new album??? (We can only Hope So!)
There have been some interesting developements on the local music scene as well. Mike Fisher of Hammingwell has a new project and new CD on the go... from an old source. "Back in the 70's I was part of a project called The Reaction" he said, "This CD is a mix of the original stuff we did back then, plus some new stuff we just recorded." You can be sure he will be appearing on a future episode of The Songwriters!
Speaking of the Songwriters... The schedule for April is done. Right now it looks like this:
Sunday, April 3rd.; Sandy Morris (Featuring Music from Land & Sea)
Sunday, April 10th.; Reverend Billy C. Wirtz (Featuring his Latest CD "Rev-Elation"!)
Sunday, April 17th.; Bernie Scott (of IRONWORKS)
Sunday, April 24th.; Leona Mercer (of Short & Sweet)
Many of the above mentioned artists have CD's available. If you would like to pick up a copy of any of these CD's, (In person or online), just visit Fred's Records. They have the best selection of local music you're likely to find, along with all your favorites!
In on Air News;
As I said at the opening of this months newsletter, Easter is just round the Corner! To honor the season, I am remixing the Jesus Christ Superstar special from 3 years ago, featuring an interview with the late Carl Anderson. Anderson, who played Judas in the Norman Jewison movie adaptation of the Classic Rock Opera and reprised his role in the touring company production up until his death in February, 2004, put a human face to a charactor that has been the subject of myth and legend for almost 2000 years. His Judas is the hallmark by which generaions of actors will be measured.
I am also working on an Interview with Barry Dennen, who played Pilate, not only in the Movie, but on stage and on the original album! Having been part of the project almost from the beginning, his perspective on the music should be very interesting! On Easter Sunday, The Sunday Morning Hangover Cure will be replaced by The Jesus Christ Superstar Special featuring Carl Anderson and Barry Dennen, so check it out!
Following that, the Songwriters will feature Richard Shindell, and his latest album "Vuelta". The interview was recorded by telephone last Wednesday, and has some interesting insite into the album, his move to Buenos Aires, and his work with Puente Celeste. It promises to be a great show!
The Month of March, and the March Moodies Masterpeice Epic's on Cosmic Debris, has been a great bit of fun. OK... I'll admit it, I am still an old Moody Blues fan, and featuring Moody Blues Epic's for the Month of March has been a blast!
Well, Back to work... and what passes for Normal, around here anyway!
Keep the Faith!
