The Weeks Links: Feature and Opinion Pieces on Communist China
August 22, 2003

Links of the Week
How has Communist China responded to Hong Kongs demand for democracy (see 7/2, 7/9, and 7/16 Updates)?  By trying to divide the pro-democracy forces while ostracizing and vilifying those who can't be pressured.  The editors of the Washington Post (the quote was theirs) do not take kindly to the Communists anti-democratic methods in the city.

On Communist China and Cyberwarfare
Charles R. Smith, Newsmax, examines the state of American cyber-security, and the threats against it, including from Communist China.

On North Korea
John Pomfret, Washington Post, finds Communist China pushing North Korea into talks for various reasons, all of which have to do with its own security and geopolitical position, not any concern for the U.S. or its allies.

Hong Lu, a Communist Chinese fighter in the Korean War, felt snubbed by the Stalinist regime he helped defend.  Jaime FlorCruz, CNN, tries to turn that one experience into a reflection of shifting diplomacy on the part of the PRC.  Its
not too terribly convincing.

On Communist China and Trade
Daniel T. Griswol, of the CATO Institute, provides an economic argument for free trade with Communist China.  Unfortunately, his Washington Times piece ignores the Communists currency manipulation, or any aspect of national security.

On Taiwan

Gary Schmitt, of the Project for the New American Century, rips Boeing for
pulling the plug of Taiwanese Vice President Annette Lus trip to its plant after the United States pressured Taiwan into ordering Boeing planes for the ROC-owned China Airlines (more on this story is coming in the next Update).

On the Russian (For Now) Far East
Dr. Alexandr Nemets, Newsmax, has run several pieces on the Sinicization of the Russian Far East (see 10/25/02 Weeks Links).  He has another one, specifically on the influence of the Communists from Heliongjiang province, here.  Hes not the only one to note this rather disturbing trend (see 8/1 Weeks Links).

On the July 22 Falun Gong Rally
At the risk of coming across as deeply self-absorbed, yours truly noted this story from Clearwisdom.net, a website for Falun Gong practitioners, which cited an Epoch Times (Hong Kong) report on my remarks to the Falun Gong rally last month, for anyone whos interested.

Check out this story and more on the Communist China and the Terrorist War page.
