THE NORTH KOREA REPORT: APRIL 5, 2004 Dragon in the Dark: How and Why Communist China Helps Our Enemies in the War on Terror is now available: here, at Amazon, or at 1-888-280-7715. Our statement on why northern Korea must be liberated can be found here. TOP STORY: NORTH KOREA GETS BACK CHEMICAL WEAPONS WHISTLEBLOWER MAN WHO HAD EVIDENCE STALINISTS TESTED CHEMICAL WEAPONS ON POLITICAL PRISONERS FORCED BACK BY COMMUNIST CHINA; NOW RECANTS HIS CLAIM Kang Byong-sop, the man who presented evidence to the BBC that North Korea was testing chemical weapons on political prisoners (see 2/2, 2/9, and 2/16 NKRs), was sent back to the Stalinist regime by Communist China, who arrested him in January. Kang was quickly on Stalinist television recanting his charges, which is likely the only reason he is still alive. His daughter was also there to praise the benevolent and all-embracing politics (Cybercast News) of the Stalinist regime. AXIS OF EVIL NEWS U.S. WORRIED ABOUT NORTH KOREA SELLING ARMS TO TERRORISTS Admiral Thomas Fargo, the top American Pacific commander, cited the possibility of North Korean weapons or nuclear materials falling into the hands of terrorists (Voice of America via Epoch Times) as perhaps our biggest fear. He cited the particular possibility of North Korean nuclear material in al Qaedas hands as our largest concern. Admiral Fargo and General Leon J. LaPorte, commander of U.S. forces in Korea, testified before the House Armed Services Committee. General LaPorte said a nuclear North Korea threatens the entire Northeast Asia region as well as other nations in the Pacific (Bill Gertz, Washington Times). Stop the North Korean Nuclear Power Plants: Construction on the nuclear power plants from the 1994 agreement has been suspended for one year, but the plants have not been cancelled. Use this China e-Lobby fact sheet and tell the President to kill the power plants from the 1994 agreement that North Korea broke. OTHER AMERICAN-RELATED NEWS NORTH KOREA CALLS AEGIS DEPLOYMENT THE MOST OUTRIGHT HOSTILE ACT North Korea blasted American plans to deploy an Aegis-armed destroyer in the Korean theatre as the most outright hostile act (Washington Times, third item). The anti-missile Aegis system greatly diminishes the value of North Koreas missile arsenal. Missiles of any and all ranges are the Stalinists weapons of choice. ABDUCTION NEWS IS NORTH KOREA READY TO SEND CHILDREN OF EX-ABDUCTEES TO JAPAN? According to a Japanese lawmaker who held secret talks with North Korea, the Stalinist regime had hinted at a willingness to allow families of five abduction victims to move to Japan (United Press International via Washington Times). North Korea admitted to kidnapping thirteen Japanese citizens between 1978 and 1983. The Stalinists claimed eight of them died, but gave no evidence of death. The five they admitted survived have been in Japan for a year and a half, but the North has held their children hostage. Dozens of more families claim the North kidnapped their loved ones (see 9/23/02, 9/30/02, 10/7/02, 10/14/02, 10/21/02, 10/28/02, and 11/18/02 NKRs). OTHER SOUTH KOREA NEWS INVESTIGATION INTO ROHS ELECTION FUNDING ENDS . . . The probe into the financing of dovish President Roh Moo-hyuns 2002 election campaign has ended, with only Choi Do-sul, a Roh aide already facing charges, fingered for wrongdoing. The hawkish opposition Grand National Party, which could get waxed in next months legislative elections (see last NKR), was not happy with the result. Report: BBC . . . AS THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BEGINS The vote for the National Assembly will take place next Thursday, and campaigning in earnest began last week. The Grand Nationals currently control the assembly, but their insistence on impeaching Roh has led to a surge in support for his dovish Uri Party, enough to crush all competitors, at least for now. Report: BBC COMMENTARY/ANALYSIS John Larkin and Donald MacIntyre, Time Asia, examine the intersection of dovish President Roh Moo-hyuns impeachment and this months National Assembly elections, in which the pro-Roh Uri Party could ride a wave of anti-impeachment anger.
