THE NORTH KOREA REPORT: MARCH 29, 2004

Dragon in the Dark: How and Why Communist China Helps Our Enemies in the War on Terror
is now available: here, at Amazon, or at 1-888-280-7715.

Our statement on why northern Korea must be liberated can be found
here.

TOP STORY:  NK REFUGEES HELD BY COMMUNIST CHINA ON HUNGER STRIKE
DETAINED REFUGEES PROTESTING POLICY TO SEND THEM BACK TO NORTH KOREA
Reports out of Communist China indicate some North Korean refugees detained by the PRC are on a hunger strike to protest being sent back to North Korea.  As the BBC notes, If they are discovered by Chinese police, they are almost certain to be returned home. China has a treaty with its ally North Korea which obliges it to send refugees back.

South Korea, whose dovish government has a checkered history of dealing with North Korean refugees, stepped up to the plate and announced they are willing to accept North Korean refugees who want to go to the South (Voice of America via
Epoch Times, HK).

OTHER NEWS ON COMMUNIST CHINAS ROLE
COMMUNIST CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS NK OK WITH THIRD NUKE TALK ROUND
Communist Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing told the world that North Korea, his two-day host last week (see last NKR) has agreed to push towards a third round of international talks (BBC) on its nuclear weapons program.  Li said North Korea holds a positive attitude toward the situation no surprise considering how well things have gone for the regime.

The first two rounds of talks went nowhere, despite major American shifts toward North Koreas position.  Meanwhile as talks continue (a third round is scheduled for sometime before July 1) the Stalinists can continue to build and hide nuclear weapons (see
3/1 NKR), and throw around some rhetorical bluster to boot (Washington Post, third item).

AXIS OF EVIL NEWS
OPEC SENDS $250,000 TO NORTH KOREA FOR WATER SANITATION
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, of whom the Khomeinist dictatorship of Iran is a leading member, is sending $250,000 to North Korea to help improve water supplies and sanitation (United Press International via Washington Times).  The money will be sent via the UNICEF.

Stop the North Korean Nuclear Power Plants:
Construction on the nuclear power plants from the 1994 agreement has been suspended for one year, but the plants have not been cancelled.  Use this China e-Lobby fact sheet and tell the President to kill the power plants from the 1994 agreement that North Korea broke.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS
AEGIS DESTROYER COMING TO JAPAN IN SEPTEMBER TO COUNTERACT NK MISSILES
The United States will deploy an Aegis-class destroyer to Japan to advance the joint Japan-U.S. plans for a missile defense against Stalinist North Korea.  The Aegis-class ship, which can track missiles and instantly transmit data to anti-missile systems nearby, will be in place this September.  Japan was thrilled to hear the news.  Report: Cybercast News

NORTH KOREA OFFERED MISSILES TO BURMA, SAYS U.S.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Daley told a congressional committee that North Korea tried to sell surface-to-surface missiles to Burma's military government (Washington Times, second item).

OTHER AMERICAN-RELATED NEWS
U.S.-SOUTH KOREAN EXERCISES GO ON DESPITE NORTH KOREAN THREATS
Joint American-South Korean military exercises are taking place in Uncheon, South Korea, despite Stalinist threats to expand its nuclear programme if the military exercises went ahead (BBC, see also last NKR).

OTHER SOUTH KOREA NEWS
GRAND NATIONAL PARTY ELECTS PARK GEUN-HYE AS ITS NEW LEADER
As it comes to terms with the political disaster of its impeachment of dovish President Roh Moo-hyun If he is cleared by the constitutional court, as many expect, he could return to office in a much stronger position (BBC) the hawkish Grand National Party chose Park Geun-hye as its new leader.  Park is the daughter of the late President Park Chung-hee.

Should Park become the partys nominee for President in 2007 and win, she would be the first woman President in South Koreas history.  Her pledge to transform (the GNPs) image as the corrupt party of the establishment along with some surprising admiration for her autocratic fathers clean and prosperous tyranny led to her landslide victory.

The GNP must defend its legislative majority in National Assembly elections next month; the impeachment of Roh, and the anger it has unleashed, has been a boon for Rohs dovish Uri party, which has the support of 70% in one poll (
Washington Times).  One can only hope Ms. Park can prevent Rohs dovish allies from sweeping everyone else aside.

STOCK FUND MAY PUT SOUTH KOREA IN FIRST WORLD
The FTSE Group, a leading market ranking firm, announced that South Koreas economy could be re-labeled developed, i.e., first world rather than third, by September.  Taiwan is also under FTSEs microscope for a possible economic promotion, as it were.  Report: BBC

HUMAN RIGHTS AND INTERNAL NEWS
STALINISTS SAY THEIR FIGHTING GLOBAL WARMING
North Korea announced to the world that it has consistently directed great efforts to the land management and environmental protection in order to prevent global warming (World Net Daily).  So thats what its doing instead of trying to feed its own people.

COMMENTARY/ANALYSIS
At the end of another excellent column on nanotechnology, Lev Navrozov of Newsmax notes the folly of hoping Communist China can be helpful with North Korea.
