You may be driving down the road and hit a patch of ice and end up in the ditch. Your immediate plans have to change abruptly and the things that you planned have to wait.
It is the same in your life journey. You may have plans for your life, but something may happen that could change the direction of your life maybe even permanently.
It isn't any different in your spiritual life either. Your hope may be to serve God in a particular way with a particular skill and you may be putting much time and effort into developing your talents for the Lord, but all of a sudden something happens and the doors seems to close. We wonder, What is happening?

Even though the things that happen to you may not always be pleasant they will turn out for your good in the long run even though you can't see it right now. What is a detour in this life is often a bridge in your spiritual journey to maturity.
Proverbs 16:9 The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.
Just as our journey through life leads us into many circumstances and situations so does our journey to heaven. There are many good times but there are also tough times. There are times when we seem to be climbing up hill. Sometimes accidents happen and there are detours in our plans. Sometimes there are conflicts and fights. We never really know just what to expect ahead.
1. When we plan our lives and daydream about what will be in the future, we never think or daydream about bad things happening. So when something bad happens we may feel that God has let us down.
2. God sometimes throws us curves. He has purposes for us and we have no idea what they are.
3. Many stories in the Bible teach us this principle. The most famous of these is the story of Joseph and his coat of many colours. You can read about it is Genesis 37.
4. God is teaching us right from the very beginning of our Christian lifes to trust in Him always and not to trust what we see going on in our lives.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.
