<<   Lesson 1 A 1   >>
John 3: 12 "If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
In John 3 we are told about a ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus that came to talk with Jesus.  Jesus said something to him in the 12th verse that is very important for us to understand.:  He said, "If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?"
God's ways and man's ways are not the same. Jesus pointed this out when He told Nicodemus that if he who was a man could not understand things here on earth where he lives, how could he possibly understand heavenly things where he does not live.
Because of this Jesus often spoke to people using natural stories as pictures of spiritual truth.  If we don't understand how things work in this world we will never be able to understand how they work in the heavenly spiritual world.
This is the reason that we are looking at the Christian life as a journey.  Just as a trip here on earth needs preparations and has a purpose and a destination so does our spiritual journey.  We will try to understand how spiritual things work by first understanding how natural things work.
Does that make sense?
