Childbirth Choices

Under Construction..

I believe whole heatedly that knowledge is power and that one of the primary responsibilities of the midwife is to provide information so that families can make informed decisions about their pregnancy and birth. I hope you find some of that information on this website.

I am planning to cover the following topics.. (with the help of my fellow students!)

  • Preparation for Birth

Pregnancy is an exciting and daunting time. For women having their first baby it can seem like a mine field of information and decisions. There must be several hundred books on the subject and this is just a short summary of some of the things to consider.

  1. Nutrition
  2. Screening                                             See Julia's essay on Screening Tests
  3. Antenatal Appointments
  4. Rest & Relaxation

  • Home Birth - I am a firm believer that giving birth at home is a safe and viable option for the majority of women.  See my Home Birth page

  • Acupuncture in Pregnancy and Childbirth - Liz Oswald is one of my fellow midwifery students at Coventry University. She is also a Chinese Acupuncturist, and these pages will give you some insight into how acupuncture can be used in pregnancy.

  • Birth Plans
  • Birth Centres
  • Water Birth
  • The role of the Midwife

  • Pain Management
  • Active Birth
  • Induction of Labour
  • Complications
