| Most motorways in the UK have three lanes each way (plus hard shoulders). However, quite a large part of the M25 has dual four lanes, and more of is due to be widened in the coming decade. Other areas of four lane (+) road in the UK: |

| Britain's first motorway: M6 Preston By-pass Britain's first full length motorway: M1 Briain's longest motorway: M6 Britain's shortest motorway: A64(M) at Leeds. It is just 600 yards long Britain's narrowest motorway: joint between the A644(M) (near Manchester) and the A601(M) (near Carnforth, Lancashire). Both appear in 'Pathetic motorways' (see links page).
