July 16, 2008
Today is the first day of this new website.
As president of Chess Institute of Canada (CIC), I welcome you to our renovated web-site, full of information for Toronto's Chess Community, specifically for families and educators. It is with a mix of pleasure and relief that we are finally launching this renewed and updated web-site. It has taken time because we have been busy expanding our work throughout Toronto.
My President's Forum will be updated regularly to highlight news of interest to our readers. I will restrict comments to CIC's events, leaving world chess news to the many existing chess sites.
Accordingly today's highlights will be particularly long because... well... as this is the first issue... everything is new!!!... so here we go ...
Toronto Chess Education Centre to open Mid-August, 2008
Located on the second floor of 483 Bloor St. West, on the south-west corner of Bloor and Brunswick, above Future Bakery and between Bathurst and Spadina, the centre will accommodate over 120 participants for events and classes.
Open House
Shortly we will confirm our opening day (tentatively Fri. Aug. 15) with an 'Open House' when we will invite one and all to visit as our guests between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. for light refreshments, a game of chess, or to say hello and check us out.
August 16 & 17 Tournaments
Sat & Sun of that weekend we will run tournaments for children and adults. Details are being arranged, but you can expect blitz, active, rapid and more, prize money and other rewards. Details will be posted within the week.
CIC Mentor wins prestigious P.E.A.C.E. Award from Division 51
CIC's Mentor Program enables high school students to earn community hours volunteering in CIC programs. Elisa Tran (grade 12 Jarvis) ran our Sat program at the Regent Park South CRC and was awarded a $10,000 scholarship by the Metro Toronto Police Division 51 for her work. We are proud Elisa is one of CIC ambassadors.
Ted Winick selected Child Development Institute (CDI) Volunteer of the Year
CIC President Ted Winick was selected Volunteer of the Year by the CDI, a charitable organization helping over 4,000 Toronto children. Using techniques he developed teaching thousands of students in Toronto schools, Ted works at CDI's Camp Wimodausis with children who have behavioral challenges. Ted greets them with love and compassion, looking to uncover the special part he believes lies within every child.
