About WPA |
The Waterworks Photography Association officially came into being on June 1, 2001 with the purpose of establishing a permanent photography facility in the community for teaching and displaying the photographic art.
The interest sprang from Ace Cuervos's, the talented newspaper photographer, photographic course at the Waterworks Art Studio, hence our name. Our present, Jim Hill, a lifelong amateur photographer began attending Ace's classes in September 2000.
Jim and a group of ten enthusiasts from the classes wanted to continue to share photographic information and inspiration. In just a little over a year the group has grown to nearly fifty members who meet monthly to share, discuss and expand their knowledge of photography and have fun doing it.
The group has also enjoyed field trips to the Gilcrease Museum Gardens, the World Publishing Museum in Guthrie, the Photographic Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City and various spots of special interest around the state.
The Waterwork Photography Association desires to contribute to our community through select projects that speak to our hearts. Currently, we are photographing Tulsa Race Riot survivers for a permanent exhibit in the Greenwood Cultural Center.
In the spring of 2002, we partnered with the Department of Human Services and KTUL toorganize the Waiting Child Fine Art Photography Exhibit. Fifty Oklahoma photographers photographed a child or sibling group waiting to be adopted. The exhibit toured the state thoughout 2001, educating communities of Oklahoma about the growing need for adoptive parents in our state.
The WPA also organized workshops and classes covering a variety of photographic techniques. Anyone wishing to share a love and enthusiasm for photography is welcome to join WPA. The dues are only $3.00/month.
