The eye holes were unchanged. The nose was sanded almost flat, into a small pyramid shape. The mouth was completely removed, then sanded in a line straight across. The eyelashes were in terrible shape. The faceup was done with colored pencils and felt tip pen. My first thoughts when I received this head and took it out of the packaging were: "This will be a lot of work. Hopefully I can pull it off."

The pate was superglued on. For this I carved a pry point at the back, and endured a lof of cruching and crackling, until it finally broke free. All in one peice, thank goodness. There was some stickiness on the top of the head, This is most likely from a self adhesive velcro strip, which was used to hold the wigs on. I suggest using velcro dots instead, as they leave less residue due to smaller surface area. Here, you can see the SD Ryo number plate taped to the top of the head. Thankfully, the tape used didn't leave any residue.

Some two or three owners before me, a hole had been drilled in the forehead, and a small emerald implanted. It was later removed before the head was sold on eBay. Another owner prior to me had tried to sand the hole out of the forehead, but had sanded straight across, as opposed to following the natural curve of the head. This resulted in a flat spot. Then the remainder of the hole had been filled with a non-drying, sticky, white putty.

You can't see it in the photos, but the SD head had a very thick layer of a gloss sealant all over it, excluding the area around the flat spot and the hole. It was also pooled in the ears and full of air bubbles. I was able to sand most of the gloss off. For the ears I was lucky to be able to actually pick it out of the crevices with the tip of an Xacto knife. It was SO thick, that it cracked easily and separated from the head with minimal work. (That NDR Elf head is now Mizuho, by the way. She's a whole other story.)

Here is a clear picture of the faceup. As for the eyes, I beleive they are Volks default Ryo eyes, as I have seen them on another Ryo on auction. They were superglued in place, AND puttied. It took a bit of elbow work to break them free. The putty came off in a hot water soak, but the super glue stayed. I managed to pick some of it off of one eye, but scratched it very noticeably in the process. If I can ever find the acrylic polishing grit for my Dremel I will polish them smooth again.

Here is a "no makeup" picture of the head before restructuring. Some markings around the eyes couldn't be removed with rubbing alcohol or acetone, so I sanded them off gently.

The first attempt at a clean, new face. The nose is still a bit odd, as I didn't have much resin left to work with. At this point, her faceup was rough, and her "skin" was still scratched and gouged by the sandpaper. I also thought she appeared to be straining due to the flatness of her lips. For this photo, Freya (as she came to be called) borrowed Violet's wig and eyes. I think she looks much better in her own set, though.
