House Street Numbers
Re-numbering houses was quite a common occurence in London, as separate districts joined the larger body considered London. In the case of Chenies Street, the numbers had been assigned from Gower Street originally, in keeping with it belonging to the Bedford Estate. As you can see from old maps, originally there was not a through road to Tottenham Court Road You can still see the after-effects of this piece-meal planning today; most of the streets adjoining the east side of Tottenham Court Road in our neighbourhood are not aligned with comparable streets running west from Tottenham Court Road. In addition, the 18th century development, North Crescent, South Crescent and Alfred Place were not owned by the Bedford Estate, so there was a duplication of numbers. Also, some properties on Chenies Street had been unnumbered, and some were numbered using different systems (14A stood beside 14 ½, for instance).
It's often confusing trying to research the history of a building using the Census, because house numbers change, so knowing a modern-day number is not enough to establish it is the property you are researching in the past (Even today, the postal workers confuse 11 Fitzroy House with 9-11 Chenies Street.) .The property which would have been numbered 15 (at the corner of Huntley and Chenies Street) in the 1881 Census, was numbered 21 in the 1871 census, and re-numbered 15 in 1877. There is obviously another renumbering or confusion which takes place before the 1888 poor rate is taken, because numbers 9-13 are recorded as being 'pulled down' with the Ladies Residential Buildings appearing in their place the next year). Chenies Street Chambers still stands at the junction of Chenies Street and Huntley Street, is now numbered 9-11, circa 2000.
