Three Star Hotel, Five Star Cast

This show was shown from 5th  Dec 2001 to 1st Jan 2002.

A reviewer  in the Straits Times saw the first three episodes  and concluded that "if business carries on like this, The Hotel will almost go bust for sure."

It didn't . The show  enjoyed  healthy viewership rate despite fierce competition from Channel U's imported Hong Kong show. (see reports below)

It was good drama though scripting and characterisations are weak  in some episodes.  Ultimately it was the cast acting as hotel staff  with their sparkling chemistry and team work that pull the show through and save The Hotel.

Feature News about the Show

Viewership Ratings (from Mediacorps website "Juicy News")

As many as 580,000 viewers flocked to The Hotel, which boasts a stellar cast of 90 stars. The drama peaked at 6 per cent, higher than any of the episodes for Drunken Angels, the previous drama in the same time slot.

The performance overtook the popular Madam White Snake, which debuted at 13.8 per cent.

Channel U's A Kindred Spirit dipped from an average of 11 per cent on 3 and 4 December to 8.9 per cent last night.

Said Mr Kenneth Tan, Chief Operating Officer of MediaCorp TV, "We are elated that The Hotel opened with such good ratings, and are confident that it will maintain its good performance. This shows that our viewers still prefer local productions with a strong cast and storyline."

Channel 8’s star-studded serial, The Hotel, was also booked up last week as 500,000 viewers checked in to check out the celebrities. With 90 MediaCorp artistes to be featured over 20 episodes, it was certainly a hit with Singaporeans.

Channel U’s A Kindred Spirit, its competitor on the 7 pm timeslot, did not fare as well as some press reports have made out. It attracted 381,000 fans and failed to make it into the Top 10 charts.

i-weekly listed "The Hotel" as one of the two memorable drama serials in 2001 besides "Three and a Half Women"

(i weekly issue 217, 27 Dec - 3rd Jan)

An absolute super blockbuster mobilising all  90 Medicacorps artistes. The first episode had a record viewership rate of 580 thousand. The viewership is still going strong at the moment. Just watching the Ah Ges and Ah Jies check in the hotel is already eye candy.

The rapport between the 4 lead actors and actresses, Edmund Chen and Ivy Lee, Chen Hanwei and Jacelyn Tay are great beyond words. Their matching looks and sparkling performance created two pairs of best screen lovers in local scene.

The light and interesting plot is the best way of de-stressing for working people. The mobility of hotel guests is the ideal platform for the appearance of many guest stars. Thus the storyline is not contrived at all.
