There is a considerable amount of difference of location of Orangutan habitats. The landscape of the Bornean and Sumatran Orangutan differs greatly, mainly because they are of a different sub-species. The Sumatran is known as Pongo pygmaeus abelii, and the Bornean is known as Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus. Even within the same species of Orangutan, their landscape can differ somewhat e.g. Bornean Orangutans in central Kalimantan, favour a different habitat from that of other Borneans in East Kalimantan.
Orangutan habitat is dominated by Dipterocarp trees, though there are very few other similarities. Altitude ranges from 30 metres to 1000 metres above sea level. Early studies discovered that the number of Orangutans per km2 below 300m is 2.5 Orangutans, while above 300m, its 1.8 Orangutans.
The density or Orangutans decreases when the altitude of their habitat increases. More Orangutans are found at 0-500m, while less at 1000-2000m. So Orangutans are more likely to live in lowland forest. So, what is making them live at greater altitudes? Human destruction has caused the Orangutans to flee their homes, while the humans destroy the forests and build there.
