[ Aokigahara ] -- the suicide forest
A forest at the base of Mount Fuji. What's so weird about it? It's a damned suicide magnet. Hundreds of Japanese flock there every year to kill themselves; only a few dozen corpses are found every year, however.
Why is it such a suicide magnet? A book called 'The Suicide Manual' (crazy Japs) apparently states that Aokigahara is the perfect place to off yourself. It also compares ten different ways to die in terms of pain, speed, etc. I believe it is banned right now from anybody under the age of 18, I might be wrong. I'm not Japanese.
- 78 corpses were found there in 2003
- The volcanic activity in the region causes most compasses to cease functioning
- The Suicide Manual has sold 1.2 million copies since its publishing six years ago
- There's an old legend that if you go deep enough into the forest, you'll never come back out
- I got interested because it's a main setting in SDK
