Making a woodcore for a carving snowboard

I made the core for this board from shag bark hickory. Hickory is renown for its strength but it is also a very hard wood with an open grain, both are characteristics which I like for a stiff board. Though hickory does split easily I do not think this is a problem because the wood will be held together by the fiberglas on top and bottom of the wood.

Hickory strips planed on edge

The strips were glued using polyurethane glue:

After planing the wood to uniform thickness of 9mm the wood was placed on a wedge carrier in the planer and the ends planed thinner in a taper.

Above is an overview picture of the wedge.

Below you can see the edge of the wedge. Note the spacer in the middle which helps hold the wedge ridgid but also allows some fine adjustment of the taper. It is actually possible to make a slightly concave or convex taper by bowing the wedge (concave) or pulling the middle together to make a convex taper.
