Concurrent with my move toward reading and study in the patristic era (see my Patristics Page) was a move toward ancient philosophy. Beginning around 1989, as I began to be interested in philosophy as a whole, I was mainly focused around Kierkegaard and Nietzsche--in addition to having an abiding interest in Dostoyevsky's works--as well as the later existentialists, Sartre and Camus. This was matched with a later interest in Richard Rorty and his neopragmatism. But while I was reading and studying these philosophers and writers, I felt myself at a loss. I didn't have a great historical understanding of the development of philosophical thought since its "beginning." Furthermore, if it were true, as Whitehead claims, that all subsequent philosophy is a set of footnotes to Plato, I knew I needed to go back to the ancient philosophers to have a better understanding of why we do what we do now in philosophy. Not only that, many of the early Christian theologians and writers had a Platonic or neo-Platonic philosophical understanding with which they were attempting to communicate the Christian Gospel (though they also rejected certain Platonic/neo-Platonic understandings as well). This made the move to ancient philosophy doubly important for me. Below you will find some links to various philosophical websites. On my Classics Page you will also find some links to Plato and Aristotle in Greek. Enjoy.

Walter: No, Donny, these men are nihilists. There's nothing to be afraid of.
