Use cotton yarn. Instead of using a traditional granny square
around the flower, eliminate the spaces by making it a solid
block. Then make a second solid block without the flower for the
back side.

rose garden bed spread (rosegarden.gif)
Done
up in squares, forget how many for different size beds sorry have
to measure out for self how many squares will need. usually done
in three colors. one for roses, one for leaves, one for square.
Original called for red roses, green for leaves and white
background(finishing for square). Remember taking this pattern
from head memory. Don't remember where original pattern from been
doing for over 40yrs though. Made many, If do in yarn takes lot
less squares, they very big but suggest you use thread, bedspread
weight crochet thread and size 10 crochet hook. Usually you can
get 3-4 squares out of a regular ball of bedspread weight crochet
thread. Exact count of Thread usage is unavailable. I always just
used up leftovers to make patchwork squares, makes interesting
rose garden with different color flowers and backgrounds.
to start:
chain 8, slipstitch to form circle.
rnd 1:
chain 6, dc in circle, chain 3, dc in circle around (have 8 ch-3
spaces), slipstitch into third chain of first chain 6. Note:
These chain areas are done in back of stitch so each row of
petals stand up somewhat from last, gives 3D sort of.
rnd 2:
sc in first chain 3 sp, hdc, dc three times, hdc, sc. *(sc, hdc,3
dc, hdc, sc) in next space* repeat around. slipstitch to back of
start area.

join.
This completes the rose.
The next is the petals sometimes this is done in green otherwise
in the finishing color that makes the square. I do it both ways
depends on what I want in the finished work. The touch of green
is great.
