According to Frantz family lore, the father of the four Frantz brothers who
married four daughters of John Nicholas Garst was thought to be Michael
Frantz of Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, PA. This position was
published most comprehensively in 1996, in the three volumes of "Frantz
Families -- Kith & Kin" compiled by Lorraine Frantz Edwards.
In 2001, I challenged the family lore with a theory that the father of these
Frantz brothers was probably the Michael Frantz of Little Swatara Creek on
the Northern frontier of Lancaster County. This Michael Frantz lived on
both sides of the Little Swatara two farms upstream from the farm of John
Nicholas Garst. They were neighbors from 1750 to 1790. They were the same
age, and they were both members of the Little Swatara German Baptist
Brethren.
In some articles in "Brethren Roots" and in "Mennonite Family History"
published in recent years, I held fast to the theory that geographic
evidence suggested strongly that the Michael Frantz who was the father of
the Frantz men who married the Garst sisters was the Michael Frantz of
Little Swatara, rather than the Michael Frantz of Cocalico.
I must now, in 2005, retract this position. I have since uncovered
documented evidence from the Dauphin County Courthouse in Harrisburg that
the Michael Frantz of Little Swatara Creek was probably childless. I have
also uncovered documented evidence from the Pennsylvania Archives, also in
Harrisburg, revealing the names of all of the Frantz brothers, except for
the youngest two, as living in that part of Cocalico Township wherein lived
Michael Frantz of Cocalico.
For those of you who have listened to and accepted my arguments about the
two Michael Frantzes, I apologize for presenting my geographic arguments too
assertively in the direction of the wrong Michael Frantz. Future articles
in "Brethren Roots" and in "Mennonite Family History" will lay out the
documented evidence that I have uncovered which supports the traditional
position which had the right Michael Frantz all along. While it is
satisfying to be able now to find hard evidence to support the traditional
position, it is also embarrassing to have made such an important but
incorrect conclusion along the way.

PROBLEM OF THE TWO MICHAEL FRANTZES OF GENERATION THREE:
Michael Frantz, son of Michael, was born in Germany abt. 1725. His first cousin, Michael Frantz,
son of Christian, was born in Germany abt. 1726. One of these Michael Frantzes married
Magdalena Zug, daughter of Ulrich Zug, and had many children, five of whom married children of
John Nicholas Garst. The other Michael Frantz married first cousin Margaret Frantz,
second-oldest daughter of Baltzer Frantz.
Now here is the problem: Tradition has it that Michael Frantz, who married Magdalena Zug, and
whose children married the Garst children, was the son of Elder Michael Frantz of Cocalico. If
this is true, then Michael Frantz of Bethel/Tulpehocken would have been the one to marry
Margaret Frantz of Cocalico.
But a much stronger case can be made the other way around: The Michael Frantz family and the
John Nicholas Garst family were listed one after the other in the 1770 list of members of the
Little Swatara Congregation. Both Michael Frantz and Nicholas Garst paid taxes in Bethel
Township from the 1750s until moving to Virginia decades later. They were neighbors in the same
township and members of the same congregation for many years. The children would have know each
other well enough for five of them from one family to marry five from the other. Bethel is not
close enough to Cocalico to generate so many marriages of this sort. Logic thus dictates that
the Michael Frantz whose children married the Garsts was not the son of Elder Michael Frantz of
Cocalico, but rather the son of Christian Frantz of Bethel/Tulphocken.
If this is so, then a good case can be made for Michael Frantz, son of Elder Michael Frantz of
Cocalico, being the one to marry his first cousin, Margaret Frantz, daughter of Baltzer Frantz
of Cocalico. Both would have lived and worshipped together in the same community. Although the
idea is not original with me, Michael (son of Elder Michael Frantz) may well have been placed
at an early age in his uncle Baltzer's care in Cocalico. If so, he and his future wife Margaret
would have grown up in the same house.
All of this, of course, is speculative, inviting criticism and refutation.

These five marriages were between two of the leading families of the Little
Swatara Congregation in 1770, namely the family of Michael Frantz (b. c
1726) and the family of Nicholas Garst (b. c 1725). Both families lived in
that part of Bethel Township that remained in Lancaster County after the
eastern half of Bethel went to Berks in 1752. Michael Frantz was the son of
Christian Frantz (b. c 1785). The father was a Swiss Mennonite. Nicholas
Garst (the first Brethren Garst) was the son of Theobald Garst (b. c 1702),
who belonged to the Reformed Church.
In 1780, Michael Frantz was named Elder of the Little Swatara Congregation,
succeeding Elder Peter Heckman, who had died a few years earlier.
Elder Michael Frantz of Little Swatara, whose children married the Garst
children, was NOT the son of the well-known Elder Michael Frantz of the
Conestoga Congregation of Cocalico, as most believe. Rather, he was from
the Christian Frantz line. The Frantz brothers who helped organize the
Little Swatara Congregation were Christian Frantz II (b. c. 1706), John
Frantz (b. c 1725), and Michael Frantz (b. c 1726). All three were sons of
Christian Frantz (b. c 1785). And all three were listed by Morgan Edwards
as leaders of the Little Swatara Congregation in 1770.
MATHIAS FRANTZ AND ELIZABETH BESHORE
BENJAMIN BESHORE AND BARBARA FRANTZ
Mathias Frantz (b. 1769) and Barbara Frantz (b. 1771) were children of
Christian Frantz III (b. c 1740), son of Christian Frantz II, who headed the
Christian Frantz line at the Little Swatara Congregation. Benjamin Beshore
(b. 1768) and Elizabeth Beshore (b. 1771) were children of Jacob Beshore (b.
c 1740) who, in turn, was the son of George Beshore (b. 1717). George was
one of the organizers of the Little Swatara Congregation, and both he and
his son, Jacob, were listed as members in 1770.
Jacob Beshore became the Elder at Little Swatara after Elder Michael Frantz
and Nicholas Garst left the area, about 1790, taking their extended and
intermarried families to Botetourt County, Virginia. Many of the Kleins,
some of the Merkeys, and other Little Swatara families also went to
Virginia.

In a more recent study by Richard Warren Davis, EMIGRANTS, REFUGEES AND
PRISONERS, VOLUME II, 1997, pp. 285-286, and p.178, the wife of our Jacob
Meyer is given as Magdalena. No last name is given. As far as I know,
there was no Anna Magdalena Burkholder, so this Magdalena, if Jacob's true
wife, was probably not a Burkholder, but someone else.
A Magdalena who would have fit the picture was Magdalena Frantz, b. c 1719,
daughter of Christian Frantz I (b. 1685). His extended family settled in
the Bethel and Tulpehocken area, Lancaster County, after arriving on the
Ship Samuel in 1732. The names and ages of his children were given on the
ship's logs as:
(1) Christian, age 26 (b. c 1706)
(2) Eva, age 19 (b. c 1713)
(3) Magdalena, age 15 (b. c 1717)
(4) Judith, age 12 (b. c 1720)
(5) Veronica, age 8 (b. c 1724)
(6) John, age 7 (b. c 1725)
(7) Michael, age 6 (b. c 1726)
(8) Elizabeth, age 3 (b. c 1729)
The oldest son, Christian II, was born of Christian I's first wife. The
rest of the children were of Christian I's second wife, Anna, who was age 37
in 1732.
The father, Christian Frantz I, died in 1738/9. His sons settled in the
Little Swatara Creek area of Bethel and Tulpehocken, in Lancaster County.
Christian Frantz II settled in Tulpehocken Twp. in present-day Berks County.
John Frantz settled in Bethel Twp. in present-day Berks County. And Michael
Frantz settled in Bethel Twp. in present day Lebanon County. The sons were
founders and members of the Little Swatara Congregation.
Nothing is known about the daughters, Magdalena, Judith, Veronica, and
Elizabeth, other than that they were listed as passengers on the Ship Samuel
in 1732. They would have been quite young at the time of their father's
death, suggesting that they may have lived with their half-brother,
Christian Frantz II. Beyond that it is reasonable to assume that they were
married to men from the Little Swatara area. I have conjectured in my last
Brethren-L message, "Garst Wives," that the daughter, Elizabeth Frantz, may
have married John Nicholas Garst. He was a close neighbor of Michael
Frantz, from 1751, at the latest, and he was also a member of the Little
Swatara Church. I am now speculating that the daughter, Magdalena Frantz,
may have married Jacob Meyer. Jacob was born c. 1713; Magdalena was born c
1717. Both were from exiled Swiss Mennonite families that lived in the
Pfalz, in the early 1700s, before journeying to America. After arrival,
both lived in the area of the Little Swatara Creek in northern Lancaster
County. Both the Frantzes and the Meyers became Brethren.
The Frantz daughters, about whom we know next to nothing, would have been
the right ages, and in the right places at the right time, and under the
right circumstances, to have married men who united with the Little Swatara
Church. Only three members of the Little Swatara Congregation were living
and paying taxes in Bethel Township, Lancaster County. They were Michael
Frantz, John Nicholas Garst, and Jacob Meyer. It is possible that two of
the Frantz daughters were the wives of Garst and Meyer. Again, this is just
conjecture on my part.

STATTHALTER, THE SOURCE
For decades, the mother of the four Garst daughters who married the four
Frantz brothers (during the 1780s) was thought to be Marie Elizabeth
STATTHALTER. In this message I attempt to show that she was not the mother,
and that her name was perpetuated by a series of errors in the history of
Frantz and Peffley genealogies, with the original error being made by the
Daughters of the American Revolution (the DAR).
First let me say that William Tell Garst, author of OUR GARST FAMILY IN
AMERICA, 1950, never used the Statthalter name in his book. He did use a
given name, Mary Elizabeth, but never a surname. He was also the first to
publish the fact that the father of the Garst sisters who married Frantz
brothers was John Nicholas Garst. Thus his book is clean and off the hook.
>From here we have to go to the source of the traditional Frantz family
history, which was the Dore M. Frantz manuscript, unpublished, but excerpted
in Lorraine Frantz Edwards' FRANTZ FAMILIES -- KITH & KIN, Three Volumes,
1996. On pp. 315-317 of her Vol. I, Lorraine quotes from the Dore M. Frantz
manuscript to the effect that the Garst children who married the Frantz
children were the children of Dewalt Garst and Marie Statthalter. Lorraine
also quotes Dore M. Frantz (who died in 1948) as saying that he got the
Dewalt Garst and Marie Statthalter names from the 1938 book, THE PEFFLEY
FAMILY IN AMERICA, by Mary M. Frost and Earl C. Frost.
Turning now to the 1938 Peffley book and the research that went into it, we
learn how the Frosts got the names of Dewalt and Marie Statthalter Garst.
The Frosts were trying to find out the names of the parents of Magdalena
Garst (b. 1763) who married David Peffley. Magdalena Garst was the sister
of the four Garst sisters who married the four Frantz brothers (from whom
most Midwestern and western Brethren Frantzes descend). David Peffley and
four of his Garst brothers-in-law (Frederick "Indian," John Nicholas Jr.,
Jacob, and Abraham) had served in the Revolutionary War. It was through DAR
records that the Frosts determined that the parents of (1) the four Garst
brothers who were in the war, (2) Magdalena Garst who married David Peffley,
and (3) the four Garst sisters who married the four Frantz brothers, had to
be Dewalt Garst and Marie Statthalter, because their names appeared in the
documentation process for the DAR descendants of Abraham Garst.
In a letter written by May Miller Frost to her cousins, dated December 9,
1936, she says, and I quote:
"It would seem from the fact that the descendants of Abraham Garst (brother
of "Indian") proved their line through a DeWalt Garst, it must be the one
that arrived in 1750 on the Ship Patience, and he would therefore have to be
the father of "Indian" and Magdalene. Otherwise, they have proved their
Revolutionary connection through the wrong person. Since the DAR requires
documentary evidence of all ancestors, I do not see how they could make such
an error. If there is conclusive evidence that Abraham is the son of
DeWalt, and the brother of "Indian," no other conclusion can be reached."
The fact is, The DAR did make an error! All nine of the Garst children (the
four sons who served in the Revolutionary War, the four daughters who
married Frantzes, and the daughter, Magdalena, who married David Peffley)
are named in the will and estate papers of John Nicholas Garst, as
documented in the estate settlement from the March Court of 1808, Botetourt
County, Virginia, recorded in Will Book B, pages 42 and 178. This was the
source for the 1950 Garst book that had its facts correct. Unfortunately,
the Frosts had not seen these court records, relying mistakenly on DAR
documentation.
The effect of all this misinformation passed down from one generation to the
next has been to perpetuate the name Marie Statthalter as the ancestral
mother of thousands of Garst-Frantz-Peffley descendants. There is not a
shred of evidence that she was married to John Nicholas Garst, or to Dewalt
Garst, or to any Garst for that matter, or that she even ever existed.

John Frantz and Jacob Frantz of Botetourt:
In my February 28 message, "Two Unknown Frantz Men of Botetourt," I
mentioned an unknown John Frantz and an unknown Jacob Frantz, both of whom
paid personal taxes in Botetourt County for many of the same years as the
known Frantz men who had migrated from the Little Swatara Creek area in
Pennsylvania in the early 1790s.
I also mentioned that it was curious that the tax returns of the two unknown
Frantz men were dated on the same day of the year, year after year, as those
returned by the known sons of Michael Frantz. Since then I have looked
further at the dating pattern for personal tax collection in Botetourt
County. From at least 1788, personal tax returns were dated by when the tax
collector "received" them from individual taxpayers. The return would
include such information as number of white males over age 16, number of
blacks, number of horses, and a few other things. The personal tax returns
were received throughout the year, although most were received in the Spring
and Summer months.
As for the returns of the Frantz taxpayers, I have been able to divide them
into three groups: (1) the two unknown Frantz men, John and Jacob, (2) the
known sons of Michael Frantz, namely Michael Jr., Christian, Daniel, David,
and Peter, and (3) Christian Frantz III and his three sons, namely Michael,
Christian Jr., and Henry. Christian Frantz III was a first cousin of the
sons of Michael Frantz. Interestingly, the returns from Christian Frantz
III and his sons were definitely not on the same days as those for the other
Frantz taxpayers. Even more interestingly, the returns from the two unknown
Frantz taxpayers, John and Jacob, were always on the same day, year after
year, as the returns from Daniel Frantz, known son of Michael Frantz.
Moreover, the returns from all four of the other known sons of Michael
Frantz were invariably either on the same day, or one day off, or two days
off, from the returns from Daniel, John, and Jacob.
I think this is a very interesting discovery. It suggests to me that the
taxpayers, John Frantz and Jacob Frantz, may have been the missing sons of
Michael Frantz. Elder Aaron Frantz (born 1830) of Clark County, Ohio,
always maintained that Michael Frantz had eight sons, including a John and a
Jacob. The problem is that these two sons, if they did in fact exist, were
never found.
Recently I received a message from Rick Phillips suggesting that the unknown
John Frantz may have been the progenitor of the Frantz/France clan that
moved to Clermont County, Ohio. This possibility needs to be explored
further.
As for Jacob Frantz, he disappeared from the Botetourt personal tax roles
after 1797. I am now beginning to wonder if he may have been the Jacob
Frantz who bought land in Montgomery County, Ohio, in 1811. This Jacob
Frantz had a son John who married Barbara Arnett. John and Barbara Arnett
Frantz are ancestors of Brethren genealogist Lowell Beachler of Modesto,
California. Lowell has spent his whole life trying to track down this Jacob
Frantz. Could it be that he was a son of Michael Frantz of Little Swatara
Creek? This possibility also needs to be explored.
