The Hundred Dresses
By: Eleanor Estes
Reading Level: 4Wanda is a Polish girl who has moved into a new neighborhood. She doesn't quite fit in with the other students and they tease her about the way she speaks and dresses. Wanda claims to have 100 dresses hanging in her closet. It doesn't take long for the girls to know Wanda is lying because she wears the same blue one every day. Wanda wins a prize for her drawings, but she has moved away. Her father told the teacher that they
moved because the students made fun of her. The students wrote to Wanda and eventually she wrote back. The themes of this Newbery Honor Book are acceptance and respect. I love to use this book to reinforce the fact that we are all special and material possessions should not come into play when choosing friends. May we always treat others as we want to be treated.
