Get Up and Running Fast
After a Computer Attack

By Sharon Coleman

E-mail to a Friend:
My computer was wiped clean by a virus or worm. I've had to delay my trip and will spend the weekend reinstalling the operating system, all software and all company files. I'm grateful that everything was backed up outside of my hard drive.

Would you fair as well as I did recently, when a virus invaded my personal computer?

Yes, I have an Internet security program installed, and no, I don't download attachments from strangers, and yes, I diligently scan my removable disks for viruses. But the latest viruses — W32/Nimda comes to mind — don't need e-mail or a file attachment to invade your hard drive; they come in over the Internet.

New viruses, worms and trojans appear to develop faster than the computer security experts and others in the anti-virus community can respond. So sooner or later, you're going to get that dreaded message that I got one Friday evening, just as I was booting up my computer to check my e-mail one last time before leaving town to celebrate my birthday:

Invalid system disk.
Replace the disk,
and then press any key.

If only life was that simple.
