    The Coast Guard Swim Team (CGST) took off from the starting blocks in 1987. Captain Mario Fajardo, a U. S. Public Health Service doctor at USCG Aviation Training Center (ATC), Mobile, Alabama, coached a small group of swimmers.  In 1988 Coach Fajardo was voted Coach of the Year by his peers.  The team has grown steadily and ranks at the top of their division each year thanks to many dedicated coaches (paid and/or volunteer).

    In 1991, By-laws were written and approved by the parents.  Since then CGST has been governed by an elected Board of Directors which includes a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Swim Team Coordinator.  Parents are encouraged to voice their opinions on any team policy and to assist the Board in the business of the team.  A new Board is elected at the Team Banquet, usually held in mid to late August.

    At the Banquet, each swimmer receives a participation medal or trophy and a certificate with a team photo.  Awards are given to the top male and female swimmers in each age group along with sportsmanship and most improved swimmer awards.  Coaches are recognized for their efforts and there is always some kind of "home-made" entertainment.  It's a time of fellowship and fun, just like the whole season.

    Our nickname is "Gators" in honor of the alligator that lived in the drainage ditch at ATC.  Our team colors are orange and royal blue.

    The CGST competes with about thirteen other swim clubs and country club teams in Mobile and Baldwin Counties, which are governed by the Greater Mobile Swimming and Diving League (GMSDL).  Beginning in early June, CGST competes in dual meets, usually one per week on a Tuesday or Thursday evening, sometimes two per week.

    CGST has maintained an excellent reputation for wonderful family support.  This great volunteer spirit results in well run meets because everyone shares the responsibility of timing, judging, scoring, ribbon writing, announcing, selling concessions and herding swimmers.  We have frequently been complimented on our kids' good behavior and our nice pool.

    USCG ATC Mobile provides moral support.  The Command has provided not only the use of their pool for practices 3-4 times per week and hosting swim meets 4-5 times, but has supplied the equipment needed for a competition team such as electronic starting unit, lane ropes, starting blocks, pace clock, equipment storage, kickboards, and pull buoys. The Gulf Strike Team, co-located at ATC Mobile, also provides support by use of trucks, trailers, tents, coolers and laptop computers.
