August

August 1st we left Houston for Washington where we planned to base ourselves for the entire fall. Along the way we stopped off in Memphis for BBQ and blues!

Unfortunately DC this summer was unusually hot and humid, for once worse than Houston.

For entertainment and distraction we could tour around to view the "Party Animals" (D.C.'s public art version of the notorious cows).

We went to some dance events at the Kennedy Center. (The terrace has great views of the Potomac and Watergate.)

During this hot weather the pool at Krist's apartment building was much appreciated!

And Krist became very attached to our new "borrowed" Washington cat, Cleo.

We also drove to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where a friend who is teaching there gave us a great tour of the campus and area.

Around mid-month Cynthia tried a new hands-on art exprience, attending a stone-carving workshop at the Iroquois Museum in upstate New York. (Below you see her working hard on her soapstone duck.) The workshop was the scene where she finally, after four years, met up with her ebay pen-pal Mary who attended with her artist friends from Delaware. This lively group all went out to celebrate her birthday (with party hats) at a grand old Adirondacks hotel, and later toured the Corning Glass Museum.

The New York tour was capped off when Cynthia also visited her good friend Gail Fine in Ithaca. They enjoyed sightseeing, winery touring, and some fine dining!
