Subject: Re: Bouncing.......?

Dear forgiven_u,

Bouncing, as I said on the CFC message board reply, refers to e-mail.  When an e-mail does not deliver as addressed, it is said to "bounce."  There are various reasons for this to happen, as you are probably aware.

1) Your mailbox is too full or for some reason temporarily disabled by your provider and/or your provider is refusing mail while performing maintenance on its servers at the time delivery was attempted by groups.  The address is, thus, valid or can be confirmed.  Groups terms this a "soft bounce" and will attempt delivery again later.

2) You have blocked e-mail from a specific host or individual, or you have changed your e-mail provider without changing the registered e-mail address with groups such that the account no longer exists, you entered the e-mail address incorrectly with groups (spelling error), or for some reason your provider has permanently disabled the account as addressed.  The reply sent to groups indicates there is no such address (fatal errors) and therefore groups terms this a "hard bounce" and will not attempt delivery again.

As I indicated in the message board discussion, groups takes care of bouncing e-mail automatically, unlike clubs.  As you know, subscribers (members) may elect to receive group posts entirely by e-mail which means there may be periodic bounces for any of the reasons above, even on owner or moderator accounts.  When e-mail soft bounces, groups puts that address into a temporary buffer while it attempts to check the address.  Groups actually sends a notice to the individual informing them of the problem.  It says something to the effect of: "E-mail sent you has bounced causing us to place your subscription to groups in pending status.  If you have received this communication, it means the problem was temporary and has been corrected. You need take no action."  Groups will make two or three such attempts before it actually terminates the subscription, removes the member from member list.  Again, know that it will do this to the owner or moderator as well as subscribers (members) if there is an e-mail delivery  problem, and you could find yourself removed from your own group.  (I did mention it wasn't very forgiving, didn't I?)

So, what you are looking at is a history of e-mail that failed to deliver.  It has little to do with whether people chose to leave the group unless they chose to unsubscribe by blocking or changing their e-mail address.  It can be a real pain in the fanny if someone goes on vacation or is otherwise offline due to illness or real-life obligations and their e-mail piles up.

I am going to repost this communication to the CFC message board to clarify the point for others.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Brenda,

Some of the information I provide here may not apply to your specific problem.  Because others will be seeing this message, I include a few extra details.

While Yahoo! groups states that: "We support photo and image file formats (JPEG, GIF, BMP, etc)," HTML generally only supports .jpg (three character extension) or .gif graphical formats by International agreement.  Your input of a graphic into the settings area may be governed by HTML rules.  Thus, check the extension or type of graphic you are using to be sure that it is a format type that will be recognized by the code.

The graphic must be stored in an area where it is viewable by all.  If it is put in groups "Files" area, that means that files moderation must be set to "anyone" (you'll see the place to edit these options on Settings page, right hand side, third section down entitled Features and Options).  If the moderation level is set above "anyone," you can click the edit button and change it.

Also, the complete address of the picture must be present.  For instance, the picture on the front of CFC_Experimental is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CFC_EXPERIMENTAL/files/CFC_Experimental20%Graphics/clubpix150a.gif  (note the full address including the name of file folders in Files; the "20%" is used to designate a blank space in the address). If you are using the group files section, your best bet for getting the entire address of the graphic is to click on the graphic in Files so that the image is all you see on the page, highlight the address that appears in the location space at the top of your browser, copy it (CTRL-C), and paste it (CTRL-V) into your Settings area.

If you would prefer to keep your group files viewable by members only or some other moderation level, then you would have to find some other online storage for the graphic.  For example, an alternate storage for the graphic above is:
http://www.geocities.com/clubfoundersclub/cfc_experimental/clubpix150a.gif  Although this is still in the Yahoo! system, it is a slower load because it is not on the same host server as the group.  You could similarly use any other online storage or homepage space.  (We'll be publishing a list of such online storage soon although Yahoo! informs us that they will be adding a Briefcase like storage system similar to Photos in clubs to the groups interface in the next few weeks.)

If either of these answers do not fix the problem, please allow the name of your group so that I can examine the specific code (be aware that I may have to join to do so depending on your moderation).  Also, you will find information about customizing your owner message text in the Technical and Software Review section of our February newsletter: http://www.geocities.com/clubfoundersclub/newsletter/v1i8-page3.html#text and some additional information on customizing the layout of text and graphics in the same section of our April newsletter: http://www.geocities.com/clubfoundersclub/newsletter/tabledgraphics.html

I hope I have provided sufficient information to answer your question without confusing you.  I am well aware that there is a lot here, and I will be only more than happy to talk to you further on this topic.

Do you know when the merge is complete, if we will be able to link

You have to realize that this group is EXPERIMENTAL! Thats exactly
what AngelPie was doing here. Experimenting. She has basically used
HTML tags and put in music just like in a web site. Right now though
you can only hear it if you are using IE. I have Netscape and can't
hear it. I know that AngelPie was going to take it out today, so it
may not be there the next time you use it. She has also made
enquiries
with Yahoo regarding the use of HTML in owners messages. Please check
out the latest newsletter for information on using HTML in Groups
Owners messages. You can access that page here:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Cable/1415/newsletter/tabledgra
phics.html

Also stay tuned for more HTML help in future newsletters.

The character graphics were of course made by AngelPie_Mouse and put
into the owners message using Table Tags. I am pretty sure thats the
next Group HTML lesson in May's Newsletter! Stay tuned!

The founder's pictures are a set of four icons 50x50-pixel in size I
already had which I uploaded and tabled for display. They didn't have
to be tabled, but I wanted them centered, an equal distance apart, and
on the same row, and that does it.

The music (a midi file) was meant as a test. I was attempting to
determine whether music could be used. In the process, I discovered
that there are some limits to what we can use in the founder message.

1) We have only 2000 characters available. These characters can be
used not only with the information you see, but also with the HTML
code used to display it. That means font definitions, color
definitions, size, intensity, table definitions, line delineators--in
short all tags--take away from the amount of information you can
input. I suspect that the size of the picture or graphic also removes
characters available, certainly its code and address will.

2) Graphics stored in the Files section will only display for the
public if the moderation settings for Files is "anyone."

3) While you may upload bitmap, .avi, and other graphical formats to
the Files area for sharing with your members, only .jpg and .gif will
actually HTML code for display.

4) A script called SafeHTML Version 1.11 has been employed by Yahoo!
which filters the code you use in your owner message. It is meant to
protect against uploads self-extracting, self-executing files into the
space such as virus. Unfortunately, it also impacts some code
recognized by both IE and Netscape in the use of sound files. The
"bgsound src" command used by IE will put sound out there but will not
display the graphic necessary to control that sound. Neither will it
allow you to define volume in code. The International HTML rules
command "embed src" used by Netscape does not work at all.

I am presently attempting to acquire script parameters concerning what
tags will be accepted and what ignored. I've also asked if a sound
module can be added to the settings area later which might overcome
the restriction without compromising the safety of the code.

Okay, with full knowledge that you can only do this for users of MSIE browsers (Netscape users will hear nothing), here is the command:

The ADDRESS is where you have the sound file stored including file folders.  It must be in an online area with public access.  If you put in your group FILES directory, make sure the moderation is set for "anyone."

EXT should be mid or wav.  That is only use those to sound file formats.

I have not included with this command designations for the radio controls of the sound file because the script Yahoo! is using ignores them.
