U.S. Government links

The United States Department of State home page
This is a very large site!  Of interest are the following:
http://www.state.gov/www/policy.html- listings of issue areas and hot topics, which link to a combination of history, policy, briefings, press releases, and general country information.
http://www.state.gov/www/regions.html- the same kind of information, organized by region.
http://www.state.gov/www/outreach.html– summaries of the recent travels of the Secretary of State, RealAudio daily press briefings, and access to various State Department journals and magazines. See esp. "Foreign Relations of the United States" – 13 full text volumes from the 1960’s, containing information released under the freedom of information act.
http://foia.state.gov/ - freedom of information act electronic reading room. Recently declassified telegrams, letters, and internal documents. Search engine included.
http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/gils/gils.htm-the Government Information Locator Service has access to electronic documents from all branches of the US government. A huge amount of information, but you have to know what you are looking for, in that the descriptions returned by the search engine are rather cryptic.

Key Economists Websites

Newspaper, Journals and Other Media links

New York Times
All the news thats fit to print--for free.  After a rocky start it now has a good web page, in particular its "Issue in depth" collects in one place a well-organized set of recent articles.  It also has a good search engine and an interesting special section on technology.  Note especially the NYT navigator page, which is the list of links/resources used by journalists for the newspaper.

The Washington Post
Move inside the beltway--for free.  More flash than the NYT, not as simple to use.  More columnists, a weak business section.

Los Angeles Times
The view from the left coast, also free.  Historically a good newspaper for Latin American coverage.  Easy-to-navigate tool bar.

The Wall Street Journal
The online version of the flagship newspaper of U.S. Capitalism is available for $58.  Outstanding financial data, consistent conservative editorial line.  Somewhat parochial, for international stories you might be better-off trying...

The Financial Times
The FT now offers a free online version.  Coverage of European business is very thorough.  The newspaper takes a generally pro-EU stand.  Once you enter one of their (very good) special reports its hard to find your way out, otherwise a reasonably clear website.

London Telegraph
Conservative British newspaper, with a very easy to use website.  Free with registration.  Good coverage of international affairs--strongly Eurosceptical.

The London Times
Free with registration.  Also eurosceptical, in the Murdoch fashion.  A somewhat annoying site, with a large frame and lots of ads.  See also the Sunday Times

The Guardian
    Left-of-center "serious" British newspaper.

The Economist
Legendary British weekly--witty and self assured (perhaps more than is quite warranted...).  Most articles by subscription only--electronic version $48 p.a.  Especially good at rendering current economic research understandable for the informed layman.  Unfortunately a confusing web page--an object lesson in how not to use frames.

Slate Magazine
Amusing on-line magazine from Microsoft -- $20 p.a. suscription.  Sends out news summaries and other chatter.  Distinguished by Paul Krugman's column, the Dismal Science, a must read.

Nando.net
A very wide range of news, not very internationally orientated.

Foreign Affairs
Long-time flagship journal of the East Coast foreign policy elite.  Abstracts of articles only, but a very good search engine for past articles from a variety of core foreign affairs journals.

Foreign Policy
Another good quarterly journal on foreign affairs.  Abstracts of articles only, not as good a search engine as Foreign Affairs.

Lexis/Nexis
News service (academic version) with exhaustive coverage of recent news stories.  Every tree thats out there, but no views of the forest.

PBS online
Home of Car Talk, the Teletubbies and much more.

MSNBC
 Like television, only less-so.

The BBC
The British Broadcasting Company.  This is also like television, only more so.  A very easy-to-use web page.

Berliner Morgen Post-International
English language version of Berlin's daily newspaper.  With the German government moving back, it will become much more prominent.

Der Spiegel
Germany's best known news magazine--investigative reporting, automobiles and fashion, it covers it all.  Generally pro-CDU/CSU.(In German).

Le Monde
Serious French newspaper.  Very clear, well-organized web page. (in French).

Le Monde Diplomatique
The French equivalent of Foreign Affairs --comes in several languages.  Well-worth $24 p.a. for a different look at international politics.

La Stampa
Mainstream Italian newspaper -- limited web site, (in Italian).

La repubblica
Centrist, serious newspaper.  Weak web page, (in Italian).

The South China Morning Post

The Hong Kong Standard

Asahi Shimbun
English-language version of one of Japan's leading newspapers

Japan Times

The Far East Economic Review
Asia's answer to the Economist.  An excellent weekly news magazine, unwilling to accept censorship (tacit or otherwise) from any of the authoritarian regimes in the region.

Japanese Journal of Trade and Industry

Bangkok Post
English language newspaper.  Pretty good web site: ground zero for the Asian crisis.

Sydney Morning Herald
Mass-market daily -- a view from the bottom of the world.

The Melbourne Age
Mass-market daily from the other lagre city in Australia

African Newspaper links (Economic Commission for Africa, a U.N. Agency)
Links to newspapers in most African countries.  A very interesting place to surf for a while. (note: many in English, but some are in French).

The European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR)
The ECPR was formed in 1970 to provide a strong base and an infrastructure to help scholars in their research and training, particularly by fostering collaboration through creating an extensive network of political scientists in Europe. Activities include: organizing workshops, round-tables, conferences, and summer schools, publishing journals, books, articles, and newsletters. Membership has now grown to 263 universities, research and teaching institutions in Europe and (associate members) elsewhere, and provides the center for a network of nearly 6,000 political scientists. Its administrative base is housed within the Department of Government at the University of Essex.

One of the most dynamic areas of growth within IPSA has been the activity of its research committees and study groups, which organize their own meetings between congresses, publish newsletters and issue other publications. This began in the 1970s and has expanded greatly since then.
