OBJECTIVES AND IMPORTANCE OF CONFERENCE:

The global trend of urbanization propelled by the concentrated and rapid industrialization has progressively deteriorated the overall quality of urban environment in India. Some of the ubiquitous outcomes of this phenomenon are the huge population density, proliferation of slums, traffic congestion and worrisome pollution levels in our urban settlements. Alarming rate of generation of domestic and industrial solid waste by the major urban centres in India has its own impact on health of urban dwellers. The hazardous industrial solid waste and biomedical waste generated also poses its own problems of management. It is, therefore, pertinent to ponder over these issues in a holistic manner to work out the methods and policies for effective collection and disposal of such solid, biomedical and hazardous wastes. This would enable the stakeholders in urban affairs as a whole to chalk out an integrated approach for management of these vital issues and devise planning strategy for sustainable urban development.

In this context, three days National Conference on “Solid and Hazardous Waste Management” is proposed during December 11-13, 2005 to provide a common platform for academicians, professionals, engineers, planners, scientists and policy makers concerned to deliberate over the issues of urban solid waste management. The conference aims to promote discussions and deliberations on the relevant issues to evolve appropriate approaches for tackling the Solid Waste Management problem in the most effective way.
