Chapter
4: Mental Advice.
The
cool evening breeze blew through a certain teenager's blood-like hair, tangling
the slim red strands as the boy ran a slim hand along it to keep it from
slightly covering his delicate eyes. He had his school backpack swung across his
slender left shoulder due to the fact that he would make the wound on his other
hand worse if he'd burden it too much. The stinging sensation from the ointment
layered on top of it wasn't much of a painkiller, but still pain swept through
his veins and made the poor boy felt worse than before. The day just keeps
getting downright plain unlucky for Daisuke, but he wouldn't let those earlier
incidents stop him from cherishing his usual smile of relief when he entered the
front gate of his house.
It
may sting at first, but the pain will reduce before 6:00pm today; trust me...
Satoshi's
voice kept ringing in his ears like his bedroom alarm clock which was partly
annoying, but despite the fact that it was the blue-haired boy whom he couldn't
forget, Daisuke felt kind of worried and confused; lost even. Those simple words
that came out from his calm classmate's mouth was haunting him over and over
that made Daisuke ponder with every hint of interest that instinctively crossed
his mind at the moment.
Trust
me...
...Why
should I trust him? He's the one after me...
Trust
me...
...It
doesn't make sense...
Trust
me...
...I
know this is not right. I know I trust him...
Trust
me...
...Do
I?
Daisuke
clasped the front gate together firmly in place and stepped up to the front door
with an inward sigh. His alter ego muffled a soft 'tsk tsk' in the young boy's
mind and started a conversation before Daisuke could reach out for the doorknob
and greet his frantic mother just like his every coming-back-from-school routine.
\\
Daisuke... \\
\
What is it, Dark? \
\\
Daisuke...Daisuke...Daisuke... \\
\
You're repeating my name in the most frightening way. Now, will you please tell
me your purpose of doing so? \
Silence
took over them both for a moment before the phantom thief replied, imitating
Niwa Emiko's actions to suit his dialogue.
\\
My widdle Dai-chan has all grown up! \\
The
fourteen-year-old immediately choked a small 'Geh!' and stumbled backwards onto
the concrete pathway of his family's front lawn. Daisuke rubbed the sore spot at
the back of his head and sat up crossed legged with a troubled look on his face.
\
W--Wha? What was that for? \
\\
That's what your mom's gonna say when she finds out that you've got a 'boyfriend'.
\\
\
D--DARK! \
\\
It's true. Or maybe you should fill her in on the details while you were at
creepy bastards’. \\
\
No no no! \
With
that, Daisuke leaped up to his feet and twisted open the doorknob with great
speed. He could still recall the trap door that was underneath him and avoided
it just in the neck of time. Thus, the boy securely proceeded forward along the
laser-beamed corridor without hesitation because he'd knew which were real and
which were fake, but he still didn't slow down a single bit.
\\
Getting pretty nervous here, Daisuke? You're moving faster than usual. Oh, the
last one there's real, so watch your step. \\
\
I know about that! \
The
redhead made a high jump and missed the last of the electric beams, but a huge
cage from above was about to topple onto him if he'd didn't make a quick move as
soon as possible.
\\
Ooo...Big cage... \\
\
Some help you are! \
Daisuke
made a double flip in the air and pushed himself to the side by kicking the edge
of the bar. He made it to the ground without any problem as he sweatdropped at
the loud 'Crash!' that came from behind him indicating where the cage would've
originally trapped the red-haired boy.
\
Did mom make a few amendments in today's training...? Because I don't recall
having to go past through that thing... \
\\
Proves that tonight there's gonna be a lot of bondage. \\
\
Riku-san's right. You're a pervert. \
\\
And I'm flattered when they call me that. \\
\
You know what? I just can't understand you sometimes. You and-- \
\\
Hiwatari Satoshi? Puh~lease. I'm ten times better than a creepy bastard with
glasses. \\
\
Just don't mention him in front of mom, okay? \
\\
Mmhmm. Oh, Daisuke? \\
\
Hai? \
\\
...Be careful. \\
The
awfully tired teenager stretched himself before stepping up to the real main
door which actually led inside the house. This time however, he didn't felt any
curiosity upon his arrival like the last time; nearly getting electrocuted. The
huge sign above his head which carves the attempting words 'Welcome Home!' was
at its usual stake. The door stood as innocent as it was and its knob was
begging the guest to twist it open with grief--
"Finally,
I can have an equal rest peacefully for the day. No more tricks and pranks to--"
<SPLASH!>
--And
fall right into its trap.
The
cold flowing substance showered the red-haired teenager without mercy, trickling
down his face and wetting his school uniform in the process, making the soft
fabric stick to his slick skin. Daisuke was stunned on the sudden outcome and
wasn't expecting that kind of trap. Under his trance, the redhead could hear
Dark's anxious tone ringing in his mind non-stop.
\\
Oh! Oh! I can finish your sentence! Please? Please? Please? Lemme do it! Please?
\\
\
Dark? \
\\
Aha~aha? \\
\
Shut up. \
Before
he could even move, the blue pail above him slipped and landed onto his head
with a loud 'Thud!' which caused Daisuke to narrow his eyes in irritation and
his small body started shaking to prevent himself from crying his eyes out.
Clear faint snickers were heard coming from the phantom thief.
"OKAA-SAN!",
the red-haired teenager's shriek echoed through the main hall as he slammed the
front door open with a little tad violence attended to it. His ruby red eyes
came face to face with Emiko who had a nervous smile on her sweet face as she
eyed her son from head to toe and shook her head in disappointment. Emiko
casually brushed her shoulder length red hair before starting a conversation
with her son.
"Ara
ra, Dai-chan. You're all wet.", his mother concernedly said the minute she
saw Daisuke entered while slamming the door shut behind him angrily, his hair
moist with cold water and a few drops dripped down to the floor in the process.
He had a mad, but 'how-could-you-do-that-to-me?' look across his innocent face
as well. His grandfather coughed out a light laugh behind a newspaper in both of
his hands.
"You
put that last trap on purpose! You knew I couldn't sense it!", Daisuke
complained as his free hand snaked its way to the back of his head and rubbed
lightly over the sore spot. Although the bruise wasn't as bad as the wound on
his right arm, but still another part of his body got hurt in just one day and
the poor redhead was getting annoyed of his one streak of bad luck. His mother
shrugged slightly and stepped up to him while gently placing her palm onto
Daisuke's forehead to check his temperature.
"That
was the easiest and you couldn't even avoid it? Are you alright today, Dai-chan?",
Emiko asked in tone full of concern. Indeed, she was the one who would've all
the time in the world to readjust the traps around the house in order to train
her reluctant son from escaping them, much like escaping swiftly and flawlessly
after committing a crime unharmed. Daisuke had never actually fallen into any of
her traps since he was just an innocent little four-year-old, but for some odd
reason, he finally did; today.
"Aa...Iie...I'm
fine...Gomen ne...", the boy lowered his head and replied slowly. Emiko
realized that maybe she'd gotten a little too far on the trap set this time, but
what made her curious was how come her son couldn't avoid something simple like
a douse of cold water above him? It was so unlike Daisuke and being the mother
of the typical redhead, she knew that something was bothering the teenager at
the moment.
"Aha,
I'm sorry too. I thought you would be able to avoid all those new traps. Well,
guess you should go up and change, ne?", Daisuke's mother apologized with a
soft smile as she planted a gentle kiss on her son's forehead. His grandfather
folded the newspaper in his hands and proceeded to the kitchen, humming
something incoherently as he left. Emiko retreated her hand from her son's
forehead and coaxed him towards the stairs which led to Daisuke's bedroom. Niwa
Kosuke appeared just in the neck of time from the top of the stairs and eyed his
son casually as he stepped down the wooden planks.
"It
goes to show that as a legendary phantom thief, you should expect the unexpected.",
Kosuke warned his son in a whisper the minute he walked pass by him swiftly.
Daisuke sighed inwardly as he felt his father passed by him and he could even
smell the raven-haired man's scent. Being separated for god-knows-how-many years
with his father made the redhead felt a little bit uneasy in excepting him home,
but as his son, Daisuke had no other choice really.
"Hai...Otou-san...",
the soaked teenager muttered underneath his breath as he resumed up the stairs
and entered his bedroom quietly. He closed the door silently behind him and
stepped towards his bed, sliding his backpack off his shoulder and slumped his
small body onto the soft warm mattress with a sigh of relief.
"Kyu?
Okaeri nasai, Daisuki!", the little fluffy pet in the form of Daisuke
squealed in excitement as it saw its master plop himself onto the bed. Daisuke's
mirror-like image blinked a few times when Daisuke mumbled something
incoherently underneath his breath as a sign of reluctant to answer its greeting.
With helped himself onto the soft mattress and sat down beside its master who
was still in a wet condition after the incident earlier, judging by the looks of
his dark red hair which was equally soaked as well as his clothes.
"Daisuki
had a bad day?", With asked as it tilted its head slightly to the side.
"Something
like that. Ah, it's freezing in here.", Daisuke complained as he got up and
slowly proceeded to his cupboard, reaching for any towel he could get his
desperate hands on. With was still observing the red-haired boy's actions and he
could see the look on Daisuke's face the minute he managed to take out a blue
coloured towel. Daisuke was actually staring at the cloth in his hands for quite
some time if it weren't for his white pet calling out his name continuously.
"DAI-SU-KI!",
the little figure on the bed screamed at a high pitch, almost to the point of
giving Daisuke a heart attack. The redhead whirled around to face his 'twin'
with a light stammer.
"Geh!
N--Nani? With--"
"Daisuki
has got something on his mind. About someone with blue eyes, na?", With
flashed an innocent smile as it pointed towards the ocean blue towel still in
the red-haired teenager's hand, flailing in protest.
"Ch--Chotto!
Chigau, With!", the redhead was still protesting with every strength he had
left within him. Daisuke was trying with all his might to hide the blush that
started to creep across his nervous face and ignore the sniggering Dark in his
mind who seemed to be on With's side at the moment. With smiled once more and
bounced off the bed playfully, running towards the door and gripping the golden
knob in his palm.
"Hai
hai, Daisuki!", with that, the cheerful mirror-like image of Daisuke opened
the door and vanished behind it. Daisuke stared at the door with huge red ruby
eyes before With opened it ajar again while poking its head in to tell its
master something he forgot to mention before leaving.
"Get
ready for tonight, Daisuki!", saying that, the door was shut close once
more and the red-haired teenager was left all alone in silence, staring at
nothing in particular. Finally after what seemed like eternity, Daisuke ran a
hand through his own hair which was still wet and used the cloth to dry himself.
A few thoughts crossed his mind as he pondered deeper and deeper from within.
Shifting his gaze out the window, the redhead wondered to himself on all sorts
of dilemmas that he was about to face; the funfair opening and the Love Ring
that he was about to steal.
More
importantly, how he was going to face Satoshi.
As
a legendary phantom thief, you should expect the unexpected.
Thinking
about someone with blue eyes?
Be
careful...Daisuke...
For
some odd reason, Daisuke could sense that something is about to happen tonight
which might change his life...
Trust
me...
...Forever.
