February 2002February 18, 2002Could it be the recession?CRCA Mega-Team Renaissance downsizes. Although the team has clearly had a formula for success supporting both men and women riders from ranging from cat. 4 to cat. 1, it also proved to have a downside. Managing all these riders. In one of the Team Cup races where Renaissance took 1st and 2nd they were disqualified due to the fact that a suspended Renaissance rider (missed a marshaling date) took part in the race. The disqualification moved Team ReMax into 1st place for the 2001 season. For 2002, Team Renaissance will focus their support to their elite cat. 1/2 riders. Although there may be less riders in the field we do not expect they will give up their number one status in the club.
Team Metro/Sanchez picks up ex-Renaissance riderThe Renaisance shake up, provided a recruiting opportunity for the Metro/Sanchez team. A solid sprinter, multiple CRCA "A" race winner, who can climb with the best in the cat. 3 field, Brent Greenberg is picked up by the Metro/Sanchez team.
Team Union Square expands their programFollowing a wave of success in the fall, in great part due to the return of our favorite happy New Zealander, Smilie, Union Sq. took home three club race wins including the TTT, and ITT. Kingpin George Sutter did not stop there and brought together some of the strongest riders in the area. ReMax's star climber, Peter Barlin, and super-domestique Sean Mannion saw greener pastures on the other side, as well as Todd Heriott who last year moved from CRCA/Gap to Westwood Cycles in NJ is now back with CRCA's new Super Team. Their title sponsor has not yet been named, but no matter what they will be called, one thing that is certain is that they will be ready to do battle.
Team ReMax loves ConnecticutWith Pete and Sean trading their red white and blue treads for the yellow and black checkered uniforms, ReMax had some big shoes to fill. With the big $ of the NYC teams grabbing the local studs ReMax had to go back to their favorite little state, Connecticut. Current ReMax riders, Chris Rozdilsky, Badger, and John Idone proved to be wise picks from Connecticut, so why stop there. New Haven heavy weight Anthony Alessio racked up many wins in New England thanks to his sprint and is looking to challenge Wilson in "the park." Metro/Sanchez's Nate Kokinda found himself alone on the team after upgrading to Cat. 2 and although not from Connecticut was welcomed with open arms on ReMax.
Axis bolsters its roster with a powerhouse teamKeith Ryan and Paul Carbonara jump ship from SBCG to join Axis. Building on the strength of last year's team Axis picks up two of the strongest cat. 3's in the area along with Jason Bremer (formerly Kissena Development), a new cat. 3 who has shown great potential by finishing in the top 10 GC of the cat. 3 Fitchburg Longsjo 2001 stage race. With Ralph Hassard and Sean Marvel having a stellar season in 2001, Axis is sure to be the team to beat in cat. 3 races. Finishing 3rd overall in last year's Team Cup ahead of many teams that hold rosters with Cat. 1/2 riders shows the teams strength even at the highest local level. We expect Axis riders to evolve into the cat. 2 ranks.
Wilson Vasquez vs Chad DavisApparently Chad has gained confidence due to his off season training as he challenged Wilson to a $50 bet that he will have a "better season." The details are being discussed as we go to press. With Wilson being the winningest rider in these parts, and Chad not known for his ability to place, we at CFZ would put our money on Wilson.
